OMAHA, Neb. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (2-11, 0-1 BIG EAST) opened the second half with a huge run, but couldn't keep the momentum to fall, 76-61, in the BIG EAST Conference opener on Tuesday against the Creighton University Bluejays (8-5, 2-1 BIG EAST) at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb.
"I liked the way we fought tonight," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "We played really hard and we had some great individual performances. We just need to be able to put two halves together, but that will come as we keep building."
Junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 13 points and four boards. Freshman center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) was huge in the paint with 19 rebounds in the contest along with 10 points to round out those in double figures.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Bluejays, 46-44, and both squads shot 37 percent in the game. Georgetown had 13 turnovers, while Creighton had just four in the game.
The Bluejays jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead as the Hoyas had foul trouble early in the contest. Some big defense from sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) allowed junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) to get open and nail a 3-pointer to make it 10-9 midway through the first.
As the Hoyas went cold, the Bluejays heated up with a 21-2 run before McCormick ended it with a trey.
Late in the first, the Hoyas managed a 10-2 run with a bucket by Woodard and a put back from Belk as well as a 3-pointer by freshman guard Justyce Swango (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) to cut the lead to 12, 36-24, in the final two minutes.
Creighton surged late to make it 41-26 at the break. The bright spot of the first was a huge performance in the paint by Belk pulling down 15 boards on her own as the Blue & Gray outrebounded the Bluejays, 27-23.
Georgetown opened the second half with an 10-0 run including a McCormick 3-pointer and big plays down low in the post. The run cut the lead to five, 41-36, at the 16-minute mark as the defense also looked strong.
The Hoyas chipped away at the lead as Adomako and Battle were active all over the court and GU got stops on the other end. After back-to-back Adomako jumpers, Battle hit a shot to give GU the go-ahead basket, 44-43, at 13:29 marking the first lead of the game for Georgetown.
Overall it was a 20-2 run to open the half as the defense held the Bluejays with just one field goal in the first nine minutes of the second.
A three-point play gave Creighton back the lead as CU staged a 7-0 run of its own and then moved ahead by as much as eight as the Hoyas went cold.
Battle's three-point play with less than seven minutes to go cut it to five, 56-51, but it was an uphill battle for the Blue & Gray. Down the stretch, Creighton managed to get some stops and scored on the other end as GU couldn't find the answer eventually falling, 76-61.
The Hoyas will continue BIG EAST play and begin a three-game homestand on Friday as the squad hosts the Marquette University Golden Eagles at 7:30 p.m., at McDonough Arena. The game will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1 with Lisa Byington and LaChina Robinson calling the action. Live stats will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
