Women's Basketball Announces 2014-15 Captains

Sept. 16, 2014

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Women's Basketball Head Coach Natasha Adair announced the team captains for the 2014-15 season on Tuesday. Junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./Saint Mary's Ryken), sophomore guard Tyshell King (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) and freshman guard Justyce Swango (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) were selected by the coaching staff to lead the team.

"These three young leaders represent our program, community and University in the highest regards" said Adair. "Our motto this season is `Earn It' and they certainly have. They've earned the respect of both their teammates and coaches because of their hard work, consistency, competitive spirit and willingness to lead from the front. They meet challenges head on and they're always looking to encourage others. It gives me comfort knowing that I can depend and rely on our captains to lead in the locker room, on campus and in the community."

McCormick is beginning her junior season on the Hilltop after an impressive career so far despite battling injuries. She is averaging 7.2 ppg in her career after scoring 8.5 ppg as a sophomore. The shooting guard has appeared in 41 games with 17 starts to her credit and made 54 career 3-pointers including 45 a season ago.

She came to Georgetown as a four-time All-WCAC performer and a two-time All-Met honoree at St. Mary's Ryken.

"When Coach Adair told me I was captain I knew it was a great honor and I knew this was a huge thing to receive from her," said McCormick. "She's always saying that we have to earn everything and for her to give me the status of a captain meant she thought I had earned it. We, as a team, have been working so hard this preseason and summer and I know great things are going to happen this year. She's a great coach and I can't wait to start this season with her and the rest of the coaching staff."

King is coming off a solid rookie campaign where she appeared in 28 games with four starts. The point guard averaged 1.8 ppg and tallied 11 assists. She is expected to take on a larger role this season after the graduation of Samisha Powell.

She came to Georgetown from St. Frances Academy where she was a First Team All-Metro performer and team MVP leading her squad in ppg, spg and apg.

"When Coach A told me I was excited and humbled, because all I want to do is make her happy and proud," said King. "I know this is a great start to the year for me and it's my goal to bring energy every day and make everyone around me better."

Swango is a point guard from Virginia Beach, Va., where she played basketball at Princess Anne High School and AAU with Boo Williams Norfolk Xpress. Princess Anne has had incredible success with Swango going to four-consecutive Group AAA State Championship Games and winning it in both 2011 and 2014. In 2011, the squad was ranked No. 3 in the nation by USA Today and this past season the team sat as high as No. 16. In her time at Princess Anne, the squad went 128-6.

Individually, Swango was a two-time team MVP and captain. She is a two-time first team all-conference honoree and was named the Athlete of the Year at Princess Anne as well as earning the John A. Tucker Memorial Award for excellence in female athletics and leadership for the City of Virginia Beach School District. She averaged 12.5 ppg and 5.5 assists per game as well as 5.0 steals per game as a senior.

"It is an honor to be a freshman and to be named a captain," said Swango. "Having been a two-time captain at a national powerhouse high school program, it is a position of leadership that I am comfortable with. My job is to do whatever this team and Coach Adair needs me to do to help win a championship so I am ready to accept that challenge as a student, player and captain."

Georgetown is a young group with five freshmen and no seniors, as well as an entirely new coaching staff. However, Adair and her staff have experience on the Hilltop and are looking to build on a successful summer.

The team will be introduced at Georgetown's annual Midnight Madness celebration in October.
