Georgetown Can't Hold On at Xavier

Jan. 16, 2015

Box Score

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-14, 2-4 BIG EAST) fell, 63-55, to the Xavier University Musketeers (12-6, 4-3 BIG EAST) in Cincinnati, Ohio on Friday evening. The lead went back and forth, but the Blue & Gray couldn't find the answer late.

Freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) led Georgetown with 18 points and junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) added 10 points as the only two players in double figures for the Hoyas.

GU outrebounded Xavier 38-37, and shot 38.3 percent (23-for-60) for the game after a tough second half from the field hitting just 28.6 percent. On defense, the Blue & Gray forced 14 turnovers on 10 steals, but committed 17 turnovers of their own.

The teams went back and forth early with both defenses getting stops but not converting. The Musketeers went up by four, but the Georgetown defense managed a 8-0 run forcing turnovers and converting on the other end to regain the lead, 14-10. The run ended and Xavier tied it, but a 3-pointer from Horne and then a block reenergized the Hoyas.

The Musketeers found the answer in Raeshaun Gaffney who hit a 3-pointer and free throw to give Xavier the 18-17 advantage, however, a bucket from junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) switched it right back.

Battle was solid on the defensive end as well taking a pair of charges on the baseline and then hitting a 3-pointer to make it 23-19. That was followed by an Adomako layup and a defensive steal that resulted in a basket by Horne from downtown to give GU the eight-point lead and force a XU timeout.

As Gaffney battled for the Musketeers, Battle continued to be hot for the Blue & Gray pulling up for a 3-pointer to make it 31-22 at the two-minute mark in the first.

A late Musketeer run made it 35-29 at the break as the Hoyas went into halftime with a six-point lead. Adomako had 12 in the first, while Battle and Horne managed eight apiece. Gaffney was huge for XU with 15 of the team's 29 points in the half.

Georgetown shot 46.9 percent in the half and had five steals.

Xavier opened with a 7-0 run in the second half to retake the lead on a pair of free throws, 36-35. McCormick's shot from the charity striped tied it at 36, and it would stay that way for a while as both squads went cold.

Battle ended the drought with a free throw at 13:01, but the Blue & Gray still searched for its first made field goal of the second half and clung to a one-point lead. Xavier hit a layup to retake the advantage, but GU finally made a field goal as freshman center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) connected on back-to-back layups at the 10-minute mark.

The Musketeer defense amped it up and the Hoyas matched as the pace of the game picked up on both ends of the court. Adomako was on from the left elbow making it 45-42 with 6:41 left to play.

Free throws allowed Xavier back into the game tying it at 47 with less than five minutes to go and a 3-pointer on the next possession gave the Musketeers the lead and momentum. The Hoyas didn't back down with layups from Horne and junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) after a beautiful drive and dish by freshman point guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) to make it 52-51 in favor of the Musketeers.

A Burton runner gave GU the lead, but Xavier answered right back as time ticked away. The Musketeers went to the line at 1:49 with a one-point lead and made just one to keep it a one-possession game, but the Hoyas gave it away on the ensuing possession and were forced to foul.

Missed free throws kept the Blue & Gray in it, but the squad couldn't connect on the other end making the final, 63-55.

The Hoyas will continue their BIG EAST road trip on Sunday at Butler University as GU takes on the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Live stats and a webcast will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
