WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-16, 2-6 BIG EAST) fell, 74-57, to the St. John's University Red Storm (15-4, 6-2 BIG EAST) Friday evening at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. Freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) led the way for Georgetown with 15 points and six rebounds.
"We started out well, we played in spurts, but we have to finish," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "We have the mindset, but we have to finish. Our team is resilient, we're going to watch it, we're going to get ready for Seton Hall and, with this league, you need to have a very short memory. But what you have to do is that you still have to get better."
Adomako was one of three players in double figures as sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) posted 13 points and a squad-best seven rebounds and junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) had 10.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Red Storm, 41-36, but shot 30.3 percent from the field (20-of-66) while allowing 56.6 percent shooting (30-of-53) by St. John's.
Georgetown opened the game with a trey by junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), but St. John's came right back to take the lead in the next two possessions. At 17:01, junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard) tied it at seven with a shot in the paint.
The Red Storm managed a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to make it 20-9 as turnovers hurt the Blue & Gray on offense. Georgetown would hit a shot to make the lead single digits, but St. John's always had an answer.
Late in the first as GU trailed by nine, the Red Storm put together another run, 11-0, to make it 35-15 with 4:01 to go. The Blue & Gray didn't back down staging a 5-0 spurt over the final minutes with a three-point play by Battle and a turnover turning into a Woodard layup on the other end.
The Hoyas went into the break trailing 35-20. Shooting was the difference with St. John's hitting over 50 percent and GU managed just 27.6 percent from the field.
After an early St. John's bucket, the Hoyas opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Battle and a pair of three-point plays by Adomako to cut the lead to eight, 37-29, posting a 9-0 run. St. John's answered with a 6-0 spurt of its own to stop the Hoya momentum.
The eight-point deficit would be as close as GU would come as every Hoya attempt to get back in the game, was stopped by the pesky St. John's defense.
Late in the contest, GU managed a late run when junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) sank a 3-pointer to make it 66-52. Despite more action on offense, the defense couldn't stop the Red Storm making a comeback difficult and the Hoyas could never get closer than 14.
GU battled to the 74-57 final.
The staff and players wore lime green ribbons for the contest to support Kent State Head Women's Basketball Coach Danielle O'Banion in her fight against lymphoma. Coaches around the nation will be joining with the cause this weekend in her honor.
Georgetown will continue its homestand with a noon game against the No. RV/25 Seton Hall University Pirates on Sunday at McDonough Arena. The contest is Georgetown's annual Kids Take Over McDonough Day. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto and Ben Gordon-Goldstein will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
