WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad (4-16, 2-6 BIG EAST) put together a huge effort, but couldn't hang on falling to the No. RV/25 Seton Hall Pirates (18-2, 7-1 BIG EAST), 99-85, in overtime Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup.
"I'm very proud of the team tonight," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "They played with heart, they played with toughness, they played with resilience, they played with fight. We always talk about playing for 40 minutes, and it happened to be 45 today. I walk away from this game knowing that we're still getting better."
Freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) led the way with a career-high 25 points and was one of five Hoyas in double figures. Junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard) both had 16 points apiece. Junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) managed 11 and junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) tallied 10.
The Hoyas shot 39.0 percent (32-of-82) in the game, but allowed SHU 48.7 percent shooting. Georgetown outrebounded the Pirates, 50-42, including 18 offensive boards.
At the final media timeout of regulation, Georgetown held a 74-71 advantage as the Pirates amped up the defense with a full-court press. A jumper made it a one-point game as GU went cold.
SHU regained the lead for the first time in the half on a layup, but the Blue & Gray worked it down low to Adomako who connected to make it 76-75. The key play came on the next possession as the Pirates drove again and the basket went in, but was called off on an offensive foul when McCormick took the charge.
On the ensuing play, Adomako was fouled on a layup and sank the free throw to make it 79-75 for the three point play. Seton Hall scored quickly as time ticked under one minute and applied the press looking for the stop. Instead, Vitalis battled for an offensive rebound and sank the putback to make it a four-point game.
Tabatha Richardson-Smith came down and made a long three to cut it to one with 29.2 remaining in the contest and the Pirates were forced to foul. Adomako went to the line and hit one of two to make it 82-80 with 25.4 to go.
Daisha Simmons laid it in to tie it at 82 as GU called its final timeout with 11.9 to go. The Hoyas drew up a play, but the ball banged off the rim forcing extra time.
Seton Hall took a four-point lead in overtime, but McCormick answered with a trey to cut it to one. The Pirates hit one of their own to make it 89-85 as GU couldn't find a comeback eventually falling, 99-85.
The Hoyas jumped out to an early four-point lead as the Blue & Gray battled inside and found the bottom of the net. On defense, the squad came up with early stops to make it 8-4 four minutes into the contest. A 12-0 run gave Seton Hall the lead as GU went cold.
Adomako ended the run as a Hoya steal turned into a layup on the other end. Battle added a 3-pointer midway through the half to make it 17-13 as the Blue & Gray battled to keep it a close game.
Free throws by freshman point guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) cut the lead back to four with under seven minutes to go in the first as the defense buckled down and slowed the Pirate offense. GU managed the stop and Horne sank a trey from the top of the key to cut it to one.
On the next possession, a Hoya steal resulted in a McCormick jumper and despite an answer by Seton Hall, Battle laid it in and Horne added another from downtown. The defense came up big on a steal by sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) and McCormick sank another bucket to give Georgetown the 28-24 lead on a 15-4 run and force Seton Hall to call timeout.
The run continued as McCormick hit a trey on the right side to make it 31-25 as the Hoyas were rolling. An SHU three-point play cut the lead as the Pirates applied the full-court press. GU handled it with ease resulting in back-to-back layups, additionally, the defense was huge down low to stop the potent offense.
A putback back from Battle put GU up nine and on the other end, McCormick took the charge to ignite the bench and the crowd. Horne was unstoppable from long-range with a 3-pointer in the corner with under a minute to go and even a Seton Hall answer wasn't enough as Georgetown went into the break leading, 40-31.
The Blue & Gray put together a 24-8 run to close out the half. The squad shot 41.7 percent (15-of-36) in the half, and outrebounded the Pirates, 26-16, including nine on the offensive glass. Battle led the team with 11 points and Horne's three 3-pointers gave her nine in the half. The Hoyas led by as much as 12 in the first and the Pirates by as much as eight with six lead changes.
The Pirates didn't back down in the second quickly trimming the lead to six, but Georgetown didn't waver. GU managed back-to-back buckets after Burton stripped the ball on defense to make it 46-36.
As time ticked away the Hoyas clung to a small lead, battling in the paint as the Pirates slashed to the basket. Seton Hall also heated up from long range cutting the lead to two, 58-56, on a 3-pointer midway through the half.
Vitalis answered with a layup and defensive rebound which she sent up the floor to Adomako who managed the three-point play to move it back to seven.
Every time Georgetown gained momentum, the Pirates had an answer never allowing GU to pull away and keep it within reach for both squads.
At 7:47, the Pirates found a way with a three-point play and layup to tie it at 67 and force the Hoyas to call timeout. Vitalis nailed a pair of free throws to retake the lead, and on the other end she had a key block. Battle came down and nailed a trey with no hesitation as GU made it a two-possession game, 72-67.
This led to the late heroics on both sides and the eventual overtime as the Blue & Gray fell, 99-85.
The staff and players wore lime green ribbons for the contest to support Kent State Head Women's Basketball Coach Danielle O'Banion in her fight against lymphoma. Coaches around the nation joined with the cause this weekend in her honor.
The Hoyas will be back in action next weekend as the squad travels to the Midwest to take on the DePaul University Blue Demons on Friday and the Marquette University Golden Eagles on Sunday. Friday's contest will be broadcast live on Hoyavision, and Sunday's game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Live stats will be available for both contests at www.GUHoyas.com.
