WASHINGTON - Georgetown fell behind early in the game and rallied in the second half, but could not overcome 17 turnovers as Xavier held on for a 66-53 win over the Hoyas in front of 8,576 at Verizon Center Tuesday night.

Georgetown's four-game win streak ended and had an eight-game home streak against BIG EAST Conference opponents end. The Hoyas fall to 14-6 overall and 6-3 in the BIG EAST. Xavier improves to 14-7 and 5-4 in league play.

Junior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) scored 13 points to lead the Hoyas, while freshman forward L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) added 12 points, and senior center Joshua Smith (Kent, Wash./Kentwood/UCLA) had 10 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) added seven points and six rebounds.

The Hoyas trailed by 13 points, 29-16, at halftime and Xavier maintained its lead through much of the second half, taking its biggest lead, 48-30, on a 3-pointer from Trevon Bluett with 10:21 remaining.

The Blue & Gray did not quit, using a 17-6 spurt over a span of 6:09 and pulling to within 54-47 on a layup from Smith-Rivera with 3:54 to play, but that was as close as they would get.

Georgetown fell behind early in the first half and never recovered. The Blue & Gray's only lead of the game came nearly three minutes into the contest when Trawick converted a conventional three-point play with 17:22 to play.

The Hoyas took a 6-5 lead on a 3-pointer from freshman forward L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) and pulled to within 11-8 on a layup from senior guard Aaron Bowen (Jacksonville, Fla./QEA [N.C.]) with 11:17 to play, but that would be the team's only field goal until a jumper from freshman forward Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) with two seconds left.

By that point, Xavier had used an 18-4 run over 7:32 and took a 29-12 lead on a 3-pointer from Myles Davis with 1:43 to play in the half. The Hoyas missed seven-straight shots and turned the ball over six times during that span. GU shot only 25.0 percent from the floor and committed 12 turnovers, but only went into the break trailing by 13 points, 29-16.

The Hoyas are back on the road again this weekend, visiting Creighton Saturday, Jan. 31. Tipoff in Omaha, Neb. Is slated for 2 p.m. The game will be shown live on CBS College Sports, with Andrew Catalon calling the play-by-play and Steve Lappas serving as the color analyst. The game can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
