Oct. 19, 2015 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's tennis squad completed its fall campaign over the weekend at the ITA Atlantic Regionals in Lynchburg, Va., hosted by Liberty. The Hoyas had four individuals and two doubles pairs entered in the event.
Leading the Hoyas in singles action were junior Victoire Saperstein (Las Vegas, Nevada/Odyssey Charter School) and freshman Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula).Saperstein defeated William & Mary's top player, No. 5 seeded in singles and 46th player in the nation, Leeza Nemchinov, 6-4, 6-2. The victory is one of Saperstein's best performances as a collegiate athlete and one of the best matches for Georgetown since former Hoya Lauren Greco outplayed the top seed from the University of Virginia (UVA) at the 2012 ITA Regional. Saperstein rounded out the Main Singles Draw with, 7-5, 6-0, loss to UMBC's Maria Siopacha.
Nakagawa also went 1-1 in singles play with a win over Morgan State's Danielle Thompson, 7-6 (4), 6-2, before losing to UVA's Victoira Olivarez, 6-2.5-7, 6-3.
In doubles action, Saperstein and Nakagawa once again paced Georgetown's efforts with a 3-1 showing. In the first round, the pair downed Liberty's Emily Groeneveld and Belen Rivera, 8-1. Continuing their success, the duo defeated Virginia Tech's Elena Cerezo-Codina and Caroline Daxhelet, 8-1, in the second round and Liberty's Evangeline Crist and Valerie Thong, 8-5, in the Quarterfinal Round.
Saperstein and Nakagawa finished the weekend with a loss to UVA's Julia Elbaba and Skylar Morton in the semifinals, 7-6 (1), 6-2. The pair join Greco as the only Hoyas to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Regionals.
The Blue & Gray will return to action on Jan. 23 when the team travels to Princeton, N.J. to match up against Princeton.
