WASHINGTON - The top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer squad secured a place in the BIG EAST Championship Game with a 1-0 victory over the fourth-seeded Xavier University Musketeers (12-6-1) in the BIG EAST Conference Championship Semifinal game on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are 14-2-2 overall and will face the winner of No. 2 Creighton and No. 6 Providence on Sunday at Shaw Field at 1 p.m.
This is the fifth time in program history that the Hoyas have advanced to the championship game, but the Blue & Gray has never won the tournament. Georgetown is on a program-record 15-game unbeaten streak and has broken the record for consecutive wins with 12. Earlier this year, the Blue & Gray posted six-consecutive shutouts for a program record and has a total of eight on the season.
"Anytime you're in a semifinal in a knockout tournament, finding a way to win is the primary thing you're looking at," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "I thought it wasn't one of our best performances, and you have to give Xavier a lot of credit for that. Finding a way to get the result and get in the final is huge."
Xavier had the first chance of the game as a counter forced the Hoya defense to come up with a pair of big blocks. The Musketeers followed that up with a golden 1v1 opportunity between Matt Vasquenza and GU keeper JT Marcinkowki (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle). Vasquenza got past the defense and fired on the right side as Marcinkowski was forced to come out. Marcinkowski made the save with his glove to keep it scoreless and begin a Georgetown counter.
As the Blue & Gray brought it back, the ball went to junior midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) who dribbled down the field and then passed it to senior forward Brandon Allen at the top of the 18. Allen took a touch and fired, finishing perfectly to the upper left part of the goal and out of reach for Xavier keeper Dallas Jaye to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute.
Georgetown continued to pressure as the Blue & Gray battled and held possession for much of the half. Xavier had chances but couldn't connect as GU went into the break leading, 1-0.
Xavier came out firing in the second half as the Musketeers were pressuring and the Hoya defense was forced to make some big stops to keep the lead. A scramble in front of the net resulted in a team save cleared off of the line as everyone got into the act to keep the ball out of the net.
In the 58th minute, junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) slipped it to senior midfielder David Witkoff (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna-Lincoln) at the back post, who looked to have a clear shot at the net. Jaye made an incredible leap and pushed it over the crossbar.
The game became much more physical as the minutes ticked by and Xavier searched for the equalizer.
As the Musketeers packed it in, the Hoyas remained in control and had more chances including a bike attempt from Muyl with just three minutes remaining.
The following minute, a long throw resulted in a flick to the back post and a golden opportunity that went just wide of the post to keep the GU advantage. That would be the last chance of the game as the goal kick allowed time to run off of the clock and Georgetown to secure a place in the final.
Both teams managed 10 shots in the game, and Georgetown took five corner kicks to the Musketeers' two. Marcinkowski was awarded the win with two saves and the shutout, while Jaye took the loss tallying three saves on the afternoon.
No. 1 Georgetown will await the winner of No. 2 Creighton and No. 6 Providence. The championship game will be played at Shaw Field on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com, and the game will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 2 with Mark Rogindino providing play by play and Brian Dunseth doing color commentary.
Tickets for Sunday's game are available through the Georgetown University Athletic Ticket Office, or WeAreGeorgetown.com. Students from the two participating schools are free with a valid student ID.
