PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2015-16 season with a 71-60 victory over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks (0-1) on Friday evening at the W.P. Hytche Center in Princess Anne, Md.
Sophomore guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) led the way for the Hoyas with 23 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) managed 14 points and six boards. Junior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) rounded out those in double figures with 11 points and three rebounds.
The Hoyas shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field, and outrebounded the Lady Hawks, 46-42, as well as forcing 14 turnovers.
In the final four minutes, UMES managed a comeback cutting the lead to three, 60-57. However, Woodard managed a layup and graduate student Jasmine Jackson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) hit a big three to silent the Lady Hawk faithful at the 1:57 mark.
After a defensive stop, McCormick added a free throw forcing UMES to foul and securing the Hoya victory. At the final whistle, Georgetown had the 71-60 win.
"UMES is a good team, it's a team that went to the championship of their playoffs, is returning 12 players and we're in their gym," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "It was a close game at our place last year, but I saw a lot of good things in our team. This is the start of our season. If it was perfect right now, great, but it's not. We have to take the things we did well and applaud our kids, and the things we need to improve upon, we watch film and get better."
Woodard opened the 2015-16 season swishing a 3-pointer from the top of the key, but both teams soon went cold. Three minutes later, Adomako sank another as the Hoyas began to build a lead.
In her first intercollegiate game, freshman guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) hit a trey, and McCormick added one from the corner as GU took the 11-point lead late in the first quarter. GU led at the end of the first, 17-7.
Adomako hit a jumper to open the second as the Blue & Gray were in command of the game. Senior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) added a 3-pointer midway through the second as everyone was hitting from downtown. Free throws allowed the Lady Hawks to mount a comeback, cutting the lead to seven late in the second quarter.
Adomako stopped the run with a put-back with just seconds on the clock, and the Hoyas went into the break leading 30-21.
UMES came out firing in the second half, cutting the lead to two, 35-33, as TeAmber Burke scored nine points in the first five minutes of the half. A put-back from senior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard) stopped the run, but with the crowd fired up GU looked to regain a double-digit advantage.
McCormick made it a 10-point lead, 45-35, but the Lady Hawks answered with a 3-pointer. Late free throws made it 47-38 at the end of the third.
UMES hit a pair of 3-pointers early on in the fourth as the Lady Hawks had the hot hands. A 5-0 run cut it to five, 51-46, but the Hoyas got out on the break and McCormick hit the three-point play to give GU some breathing room.
This would set up the exciting final five minutes as the crowd got into the action. Despite the momentum, Georgetown managed to hold on for the victory.
"1-0 is better than 0-1, and our kids did it," said Adair. "We made plays down the stretch and we had poise. You take the leadership that was on the floor, the energy from the bench and bottle it up and get ready for game two. A win is a win, and I'm proud of them. They fought until the end."
