WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer squad (11-5-4) failed to advance against the Hofstra University Pride (13-5-2) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. The teams combined for four second-half goals, but the contest ended in a 2-2 double-overtime tie and, for the second-consecutive game, the Blue & Gray failed to advance on penalty kicks.
"It's disappointing, especially to have just gone through this in the BIG EAST Tournament as well," said Georgetown Head Coach Dave Nolan. "At some point the season has to end and for most teams it ends on a loss, for us it ends on a tie."
Hofstra had a shot off of the opening kickoff that resulted in a corner and then a header from close range that was saved by GU keeper Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) as the Hoyas looked to settle it early. The Blue & Gray began to gain possession, being active on corner kicks, but could not generate quality looks at the goal.
Midway through the half, junior forward Grace Damaska (Milton, Ga./Blessed Trinity) used some fancy footwork to slide it across the goal mouth. With senior forward Crystal Thomas (Elgin, Ill./Wheaton Academy (Notre Dame)) charging and Hofstra keeper Friederike Mehring beat, Thomas was unable to get a foot on it as the ball went just wide of the far post.
It was Georgetown that had the momentum as the Hoyas controlled the pace of the contest 25 minutes in.
With 10 minutes remaining in the half, a free kick opportunity just outside the box gave the Pride a golden chance. However, the Hoya defense deflected the shot and then cleared the ensuing corner out of danger. The opportunity gave the Pride some energy as Hofstra had the better looks late in the half.
A GU shot gave Hofstra a counter and a 3v3 opportunity as a shot from Leah Galton forced Newins off of her line. With the ball rolling towards the net, sophomore defender Drew Topor (Madison, N.J./Pingry) came up with a huge clearance off of the line to keep it scoreless.
In the final minute, it looked as though the Pride would have the lead going into the break, but an offside player brought it back to make it scoreless at the half.
Hofstra opened the second much like the first, immediately earning a corner kick. The ball went into the middle and was kicked away, but Jeannine Molleda sent the second ball in and Madeline Anderson flicked it on and to the back post to make it 1-0 in the 47th minute and giving the Pride the lead.
Minutes later, sophomore midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) sent a ball in and Damaska got past the defense and was all alone with Mehring. However, her touch alluded her and the shot sailed over the crossbar as GU searched for the equalizer.
It came in the 55th minute as Corboz sent in a ball from the left side to sophomore Chloe Knott (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College). The midfielder faked a shot and took it near the endline, where she created space for graduate student Melissa Downey (McLean, Va./McLean (Princeton)) who shot it into the far corner to tie the game at one.
Possession was even as time ticked down, but everything changed in the 78th minute as a foul in the box resulted in a Hofstra penalty kick. Galton buried it just under the crossbar to once again give the Pride the lead, 2-1.
The Hoyas were not done yet, however, as Thomas found Damaska, who was able to sneak in behind the defense setting up the 1v1 with the keeper for the second time in the contest. This time, she finished perfectly to tie the game at two in the 84th minute.
Moments later, Damaska was all alone again but this shot went just wide of the left post as the Hoyas continued to pressure. Hofstra had a chance go high in the final minute, sending the game into overtime.
The overtime period opened with Damaska streaking down the left side with her defender beat, but Mehring made a huge glove save to keep time moving.
That would be the lone chance in the period as the teams continued into the final 10 minutes.
Early in the second overtime, the Hoyas had a chance on a corner, but the ball went harmlessly through the box. Both teams had chances late, including a far post shot by Damaska that went high. That would be the final chance as the game ended in a draw, 2-2, and the teams went to penalty kicks.
Penalty kicks started well for the Hoyas, but a save and a miss sealed the decision as Hofstra advanced to the second round.
Georgetown ends the season with an overall record of 11-5-4. The Hoyas will graduate eight players, but return a solid group in 2016 including three of the top four scorers.
"They are quite a group. They really enjoy being around each other and that's part of the sadness right now," said Nolan. "The soccer side of their camaraderie is finished until the spring, and it will change the dynamic because the seniors will be moving on."
