Nov. 26, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (2-1) will travel to the 2015 TD Bank Classic this weekend at the University of Vermont to play in a pair of games in the tournament. Georgetown will take on Quinnipiac University on Friday evening, and then the winner of the University of Vermont and St. Francis (Brooklyn) on Saturday evening.
On Monday, freshman guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after a solid week for the Hoyas. Additionally, junior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
White helped Georgetown to a 1-1 week which included a 17-point victory over visiting Virginia Tech on Wednesday night. Against the Hokies, White went for a career-high 16 points off 5-of-8 shooting, while stuffing the stat sheet with nine rebounds, five steals and a pair of assists.
At Memphis on Sunday, White sparked the Hoyas' comeback by scoring all seven of her points in the fourth quarter, while five of her game-high seven steals came over the final 10 minutes as Georgetown battled from 16 down to get within one with 12 seconds left. She also posted a squad-best nine boards. White's seven thefts are the most by any BIG EAST player in a game this season while her 4.3 steals per game average over three games leads the league.
Woodard averaged 15.0 points and 4.0 rebounds over two games while shooting 48 percent from the field for the Blue & Gray. The junior totaled 20 points at Memphis on Sunday as Georgetown's late-game rally came up just shy. She also had 10 points and four boards in the Virginia Tech victory.
Sophomore guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) is leading the team in scoring with 15.0 ppg and has posted 4.7 rpg. Woodard is second with 13.7 ppg as well as 3.7 rpg, and White rounds out the top three with 8.7 ppg as well as a team-high 8.0 rpg.
Georgetown holds a +2.3 rebounding margin over opponents and is shooting 39.0 percent on the season. The Blue & Gray also holds a +3.3 turnover margin. The Hoyas are currently 1-1 on the road.
Quinnipiac is 3-1 on the season and coming off of a 58-56 victory over Temple University on Tuesday evening. The team is led by Adily Martucci averaging 10.5 ppg, while Sarah Shewan is second with 10.3 ppg. Already this season, the team has wins over Hartford, Holy Cross and Temple with a 67-57 loss to Army.
This is the first meeting between the squads.
Vermont fell 71-54 on Monday evening to an undefeated Brown University squad. The Bobcats are 1-3 heading into the TD Bank Classic after Thanksgiving in Patrick Gym. Andreana Thomas picked up her first double-double as a Catamount as she led Vermont's offense by posting 15 points and 11 rebounds. Candice Wright chipped in a game-high 17 points. As a team, UVM pulled down 43 rebounds and finished with an edge of four on the boards. The Hoyas are 3-0 all-time against the Catamounts, and 1-0 on the road. The last meeting was a 65-53 victory during the 2011-12 season at the Blue Sky Classic in Hanover, N.H. The last meeting in Vermont was a 93-69 Hoya victory during the 1994-95 season.
On Sunday, St. Francis (0-3) took on Saint Peter's University falling 44-40. The Terriers were led by sophomore guard Blair Arthur who scored a career-high nine points off the bench on 4-for-6 shooting from the field. Freshman forward Maria Palarino made her first career start. The forward scored nine points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field in a career-high 38 minutes of play. Fellow freshman forward Dana DiRenzo added four points and five rebounds on the afternoon.
This is the first meeting between the teams.
