WASHINGTON - With good racing conditions, the Georgetown University women's rowing team sent six boats to compete at the Princeton Chase on Sunday, the final race of the fall schedule. The Chase was a head race, a time-based race with a tiered start, down the 2.75-mile course on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
The Hoyas had two openweight 8+ crews race in the Women's Varsity 8+ Final. GU's "A" boat finished the course in 16:12.491, placing 38th in the 66-crew field. The Blue & Gray were less than a half second behind the top boat from Patriot League-rival Boston University. The "B" boat for the Hoyas crossed the finish line in 17:45.340, taking 62nd place.
Georgetown had two entrants in the Women's Varsity 4+ Final, both an openweight and lightweight boat. The openweight squad finished 27th in the 38-boat field, crossing the finish line in 19:03.940. GU's lightweight crew was just two places behind the openweight boat, taking 29th place in a time of 19:27.876.
In the Women's Novice 8+ Final, Georgetown again had two boats entered. The "A" crew placed sixth out of the 16-boat field, finishing in a time of 16:56.277. The Hoyas were less than three seconds behind Boston University and more than 12 seconds ahead of seventh-place Drexel. GU's "B" crew timed in at 18:02.739, good for 13th place and more than a full minute ahead of the second boats from Princeton and Boston University.
"The freshman "B" boat probably had the best race all day," Georgetown Head Coach Stephen Full said. "They looked really strong as they came around the final corner, and to see all members of the boat gasping for air and slumped over the oar handles as they finished was great.
"I am really pleased with all the work the women have done this fall and believe we are still on the right track to have a strong championship season."
