Georgetown post-game | UMES post-game
WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) scored a season-high 30 points and the Hoyas withstood a late rally from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore en route to a 68-49 win at Verizon Center Tuesday night.
It was the second-straight win, and the third in the last four games, for the Hoyas, who improve to 3-3 overall. The Hawks fall to 1-5 overall.
Smith-Rivera connected on 10-of-16 shots from the floor, including 5-of-10 from 3-point land, and hit all five free throw attempts to finish with 30 points. It was the fourth career game with at least 30 points for the senior captain.
Senior center Bradley Hayes (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Hoyas.
Georgetown led by 18 points (38-20) at the break and pushed the lead to 21 points, 46-25, on a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Tre Campbell (Washington, D.C./St. John's College HS) with 12:03 to play in the game. The Hoyas, however, turned the ball over and missed three-straight shots as the Hawks did not back down. UMES went on a 12-2 run over a span of 2:30 and cut the lead the 48-37 on a free throw from Devin Martin with 9:03 to play in the game.
The Hoyas opened up an 18-point lead at the break, 38-20, thanks in large part to Smith-Rivera, who scored 17 points in the opening half, an overall single-game season high for the senior.
GU led from the opening tip but UMES hung around and was within three points, 11-8, after a dunk from Isaac Taylor with 13:43 to play. The GU lead moved to 10 points, 18-8, after a layup from junior forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic) with 11:32 to play, but the Hawks responded with a trey from Ryan Andino to make it 11-11.
The Blue & Gray outscored the Hawks 20-9 over the final 9:51 of the half, with Smith-Rivera hitting four 3-pointers in that stretch. Free throws from freshman center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) gave the Hoyas the 38-20 lead.
Georgetown is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 5, hosting former BIG EAST Conference rival Syracuse at Verizon Center. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. The game will be shown live on FOX Sports 1, with Tim Brando and Jim Jackson calling all of the action.
