FAIRFAX, Va. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a big second-half comeback to down the George Mason University Patriots (3-6), 63-57, on Wednesday evening at EagleBank Arena. With the win, the Hoyas move to 5-1 on the season and have won three straight.
"At halftime we talked about all of the things we had prepped for, but in the first half we hadn't responded, we challenged them at halftime and the team showed up big," said Head Coach Natasha Adair. "Dorothy (Adomako) hit shot after shot in the second half, Dionna (White) had ice in her veins with clutch free throws down the stretch."
Freshman guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the way for the Blue & Gray with 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. She also went 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and junior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) both added 12 points apiece. Adomako pulled down a team-best nine rebounds and had six blocks, while Woodard managed eight boards, three blocks and two steals.
Georgetown shot 36.2 percent (25-of-69) from the field for the game, and held the Patriots to 30.3 percent (20-of-66) shooting. The Hoyas outrebounded George Mason, 48-47, and forced 20 turnovers on nine steals. GU also had 14 blocks in the contest.
Taylor Brown led George Mason with a career-high 26 points, while Kristi Mokube added 13.
The Hoyas started hot with a jumper from Adomako and a 3-pointer from White on the first two possessions. The defense came up with stops, but GMU was able to get right back in the game as the Blue & Gray struggled from the outside.
After leading from the beginning of the contest, a GMU layup at 4:29 gave Mason the 10-9 lead. White sank a free throw to tie it at 10, and senior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) managed a jumper in transition as the Hoyas looked to regain the advantage.
The squads traded the lead as the minutes ticked by, but the Patriots hung on to hold the 15-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Mason controlled the game early in the second quarter, but a trey from junior guard Tyshell King (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) tied it at 11. The Patriots hit a free throw, but the Hoyas did not stop fighting.
Unfortunately, free throws made the difference as George Mason went 7-for-12 in the second quarter to build a lead. Trailing by seven, senior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) hit a layup, but GMU answered to make it 30-21 at the half.
Mason went ahead by as much as 12 early in the third quarter, but the Hoyas staged a 12-0 run including eight points in transition, four from Woodard and four from Adomako to tie it at 35. It was defense that made the difference as blocks and steals allowed GU to get right back in it, and hold the Patriots scoreless for more than six minutes.
Woodard hit a layup in the final seconds of the quarter to help the Blue & Gray trail by just two, 39-37, at the end of the third.
White's jumper tied it at 39 to open the fourth, and Woodard had another bucket in the paint to give GU back the lead. Mason quickly matched as neither team could gain a significant advantage.
Midway through the fourth, White got a long rebound and barreled down the court getting fouled on the layup and converting the three-point play to make it 46-43 in favor of the Blue & Gray. This would prove to be the go-ahead basket for the Hoyas
Down the stretch, it was a dogfight with GU clinging to a one or two-possession lead. White was the spark late converting a huge three-point play in the final two minutes, and hitting almost everything at the line.
Despite a late pair of Patriot 3-pointers, the Hoyas hung on for the 63-57 victory.
"We beat a very good George Mason team, on the road," said Adair. "I'm watching the team grow, I'm watching the team trust, I'm watching them win and they did it together."
The Hoyas will continue their five-game road swing with a contest at St. Bonaventure on Saturday in New York. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
