Dec. 4, 2015 WASHINGTON ââ'¬" The early-season schedule for the Georgetown University men's basketball team has included contests against several nationally-recognized programs, but one game in particular stands out. On Saturday, Dec. 5 at Verizon Center, the Hoyas will take the floor against Syracuse, their former conference rival. Tipoff time is slated for 1 p.m.
The game will be shown live on FOX, with Tim Brando calling the play-by-play, and Jim Jackson serving as the color analyst. Fans locally can tune in to the radio broadcast of Rich Chvotkin, in his 42nd year calling Georgetown games ââ'¬" and Saturday's game will be his 1,300th broadcast ââ'¬" on 99.1 FM WNEW.
The Hoyas improved to 3-3 overall on Tuesday night with a 68-49 win over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. It was the second-straight win, and the third in the last four games for the Blue & Gray.
Georgetown was led by senior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill), who scored a season-high 30 points. Smith-Rivera connected on 10-of-16 shots from the floor, including 5-of-10 from 3-point land, and hit all five free throw attempts to finish with 30 points. It was the fourth career game with at least 30 points for the senior captain. Senior center Bradley Hayes (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Hoyas.
The meeting with Syracuse will be the 90th all-time between the two programs. The Orange lead the head-to-head series, 48-41, but Georgetown has won four of the last six meetings between the teams. Georgetown has a 20-11 record at home against Syracuse, including a 4-2 record at Verizon Center under Head Coach John Thompson III.
The last time the teams met was during the 2012-13 regular season, the last for SU as a member of the BIG EAST Conference. The Hoyas won two of those three games, including a 61-39 decision at Verizon Center to clinch the 2012-13 BIG EAST Regular Season title.
Smith-Rivera is one of four players scoring in double figures for the Hoyas, leading the team with 15.7 points per game. His 30 points against UMES on Tuesday moved him past former Georgetown great Roy Hibbert (C'08) on the all-time scoring list. Smith-Rivera now ranks No. 15 all-time with 1,480 points and will pass Gerald Riley (C'04) with six more points. His five 3-pointers gave him 192 shots from long distance for his career, second all-time behind Jonathan Wallace (C'08), who has 240.
Smith-Rivera also leads the Hoyas with 3.8 assists per game and is sixth on the team with 3.3 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Brewster Academy [N.H.]), who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll last week, is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.2 points and 5.0 rebounds. He has connected on 51.9 percent of his shots from the field (27-of-53), including 41.7 percent from three-point land (10-of-24).
Sophomore guard L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) is third on the team in scoring with 11.0 points and fifth on the team with 3.5 rebounds, while Hayes is fourth on the team in scoring with 10.3 points and leads the team with 6.0 rebounds per game.
The Hoyas have received healthy contributions from their bench as well, with that group averaging 19.8 points, 14.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Junior forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic), who scored 14 points in a win over Wisconsin, is averaging 7.2 points and 2.2 rebounds.
Georgetown's freshman class ââ'¬" forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]), center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) and forward Kaleb Johnson (South Hills, Va./Carlisle School) ââ'¬" have combined to average 15.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
