Georgetown 74, Brown 57

Washington, D.C. - Verizon Center

Head Coach John Thompson III
On coming out sharp on defense after beating Syracuse on Saturday...

I was extremely nervous coming into this game. Mike (Martin) was a really good player and he's a really good coach. His team showed it a little in the second half, but they're a very good offensive team, they put five guys out there that can really shoot and I think we did a good job in the first half of understanding that. I think they only made one three in the first half, but I thought our defense in the first half was pretty good.

On the impact of Georgetown's three-quarter court pressure...

I think it might have slowed them down a little bit. They got a couple of open looks, which they normally make, so it might've slowed them down a little bit.

On getting minutes for the bench...

I don't know that's that abnormal. We've been playing, I don't know whether it's 11, but we've been playing nine, 10 guys all the time, so I don't think it's that abnormal. We can go 11, 12 deep without much drop off. It's just a function of the matchups the day of the game, who's playing well, who's going well, who's not going well.

On the importance of getting Paul White more minutes...

Without a doubt, Paul's been injured and he's still sluggish. We need to get him to where he gets into his groove and he gets comfortable, he's still not there yet.

On the difference in Georgetown's play between the first and second halves...

I think (Brown) started to execute a little better in the second half. I think the difference in the second half was really just all them. They were in the 1-and-1 after five minutes and that kind of slowed everything down for us and made it harder for us to get a rhythm, but I think they played better in the second half.

On if Georgetown's turnovers are a concern with UNC-Wilmington coming up...

We just talked about that briefly and we're going to talk about it more over the next couple of days. We're going to have to take care of the ball significantly better against Wilmington, because as you indicated, that's what they do, they turn you over. We've got to look at that, we've got to analyze that and we've got to get better at that.

On the tension between getting major minutes for the starters and getting minutes for inexperienced players...

With this group I think that tension is less than it can be or has been because of the lack of a drop off. We're going to have different combinations out there. For now the starters are just the first five guys that walk out there, and our guys know that, it's not like there is a big difference between who you want to designate as number one and who you want to designate as number 10 or 11, there's not much difference.

On Kaleb Johnson and Jessie Govan's play...
They're good players and it's not the first time that they've come in and contributed. They're freshmen, they have upperclassmen that are helping them, they're smart kids that work hard. I don't think today was opening up the skies for them, but what they did today they've been doing.

Senior center Bradley Hayes
On setting the tone against Brown early in the game...

I think it was very important. We all had in our minds that this was still a very big game. We came off a big game with Syracuse, but every game is important to us and that's what we wanted to show when we walked out on the court tonight.

Senior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera
On the significance of having a game where they played well from start to finish...

It was good for us. We still quite a few things that we need to work on just to tighten up and fine tune, but tonight defensively in the first half I think we did a tremendous job of rebounding and limiting them to one shot. In the second half we let up a little bit, but overall we did a decent job.

On if they feel like they are finally getting on a roll with four straight wins...

I think we're doing the things that are necessary to win, defend and rebound and if we do those two things I think we'll be fine, because we can score the ball well.

Brown Head Coach Mike Martin
Opening statement ...

"Obviously, a ton of respect for Georgetown. They are a really talented team. They are literally three possessions away from being 8-0. And if you're looking at them like an 8-0 team, it's probably a top-10 team in the country at the worst. They're terrific, we knew that coming in. I have great respect for Coach Thompson, who was the head coach at Princeton when I played at Brown all four years, so I am very familiar with how good of a coach he is. I saw a lot of things on film, watching Georgetown, that I played against for four years when he was at Princeton. The only difference is, now he has top-100 McDonald's All-American players doing it. They are very good. That first half I am not sure if we could be any worse. I give them credit because they took us out of a lot that we have been successful with. We weren't as good as we needed to be in the first half. It got out of hand but I am happy with how we continued to play for the last 20 minutes."

On Georgetown specifically stopped Brown in the first half ...

"Well their size, their length and their athleticism cover up a lot of mistakes. They didn't many mistakes defensively but it covers up so much. Their three-quarter court pressure got us out of rhythm a little bit. It didn't turn us over a ton, but it got us little out of rhythm offensively. We need to be better than we were. But I think, again their size, their athleticism and their discipline. They are an extremely disciplined team."

On expecting three-court from Georgetown tonight ...

"I thought so because they did it last week against Maryland Eastern-Shore. They'd shown it and I kind of expected it them to do that. We worked on it a little bit today in shootaround. It is just hard to simulate that length and that athleticism."

On Brown's threes not falling tonight ...

"Obviously that is very much what happened. I don't think we ran our offense as crisp as we needed to. I think we did a better job in the second half just changing sides on the floor, multiple ball reversals, the same possession as opposed to coming down and taking quick shots. Tonight if you take a quick shot, it's going to be contested and it's probably going to lead to a run out on the other end; so I thought that really hurt us. I thought our discipline and our pace offensively was much better in the second half."

On looking at Georgetown, Providence and the BIG EAST overall this season ...

"The BIG EAST goes beyond those two. Just from what I see, it's a great league. Both teams are different. [Georgetown] is bigger and longer. Providence plays a little quicker pace and they have a guy who is as good as anyone. However, both teams are really well coached. I have great respect for both Ed [Cooley] and John [Thompson III]. I expect that they'll both be a part of the NCAA tournament come March."

Junior Guard Tavon Blackmon
On him getting to the rim ...

"We were struggling a little bit on offense. We were settling. We weren't attacking the pressure to score, so I was just trying to make a plan whenever I touched the ball. Just run the offense hard and try to get points on the board."

On his familiarity with Georgetown players ...

"I know a few guys on the team. I know Coach Thompson pretty well. He graduated from my high school right around the corner. It's good to play them. Good to be back home. Tre Campbell, I know him pretty well. He had a pretty good game. I wish we could have come out with a better result, but like I said, it's good to be home and good to play against some guys that you know."
