Men's Soccer Announces 2015 Awards

Dec. 9, 2015

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team held its annual banquet on Wednesday to recognize the accomplishments of the 2015 squad. Head Coach Brian Wiese gave out the three major awards and announced the winner of the second-annual alumni award.

The Most Valuable Player Award was given to junior defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School). The last junior to win the award was forward Steve Neumann in 2011. This is the second year in a row Yaro has earned the honor.

For the second-consecutive year, he was named the unanimous BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST. The team captain started all nine conference games for the Blue & Gray this season, and played a key role in the squad's six conference shutouts.

Overall, Yaro had started 17 games for the Hoyas and posted an assist. He and the defense posted nine shutouts on the season.

Yaro was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Preseason All-BIG EAST and to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI First Team. He was also named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26.

The Most Improved Player Award went to senior midfielder David Witkoff (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln). Witkoff appeared in 18 games with three starts to his credit after playing in 20 games the three previous seasons. He was a utility player earning time in the midfield and on the backline.

Witkoff had a goal against Seton Hall and managed two assists for four points on the season.

The Ricardo Mendoza Award, given to the player who exhibits spirit, leadership and dedication, was presented to senior defender Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite).

Rosenberry had one goal and four assists along with one game winner in conference play as well as two goals and six assists overall to rank as Georgetown's fifth-leading scorer with 10 points. The second-year captain was a Second Team All-BIG EAST honoree for three-consecutive seasons. He was named Preseason All-BIG EAST and to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Oct. 5.

Wiese also announced the winner of the 2015 Georgetown Soccer Alumni Award which was given to Yousef Al Otaiba (SFS '95). The award began last year and with Dan Helfrich (MSB '98) as its inaugural recipient.

The afternoon concluded with the playing on the 2015 highlight video.

GU had an impressive season with a mark of 16-2-3 overall and 9-0-0 in BIG EAST Conference play. After opening the season 0-2-1, Georgetown went on a program record 18-game unbeaten streak including a 14-game win streak. With the Blue & Gray failing to advance in the NCAA Tournament, the unbeaten streak will continue into next season.

Along the way, the Hoyas won the BIG EAST Regular Season title with a perfect 9-0-0 record. It was the fifth time in program history that the Hoyas have won the regular season championship with the last coming in 2013 and the last outright championship coming during the 2010 campaign. The last time a team went a perfect 9-0-0 during the BIG EAST Regular Season was the University of Louisville in 2009.

Additionally, Georgetown won the BIG EAST Championship crown, marking the first time in program history that the Hoyas won the league's postseason tournament.

The Blue & Gray was the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
