Georgetown Hosts St. John's on Tuesday Night

Feb. 16, 2015

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team practiced early in the afternoon on President's Day, making final preparations for the team's first game in a week, hosting long-time BIG EAST Conference rival St. John's on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Tipoff at Verizon Center is slated for 7 p.m.

The game will be shown live on FOX Sports 1, with Gus Johnson calling the play-by-play and Bill Raftery serving as the color analyst. The radio call from Rich Chvotkin can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.

The Hoyas enter the game with a 16-8 overall record and an 8-5 mark in the BIG EAST following an impressive 86-67 win at Seton Hall last week. The Blue & Gray are rated No. 22 in the country in the most recent RPI Ratings and have a strength of schedule ranked No. 2 in the country.

In last week's win at Seton Hall, Georgetown broke an early second half tie and used a 25-9 run to take a 16-point lead en route to the win. Junior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) scored a game-high 23 points, had four rebounds, two assists and a career-high five steals, while freshman forward Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Bridgeton Academy [N.H.]) had a career-high 20 points and eight rebounds as three Hoyas reached double figures in scoring and 11 different players scored at least one point. Senior guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) added 12 points, four rebounds and tied for a team-high with three assists.

Copeland was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after his 20-point, 8-rebound outing against Seton Hall, the second time this season he has earned that honor. Copeland is fifth on the team in scoring with 6.5 points per game and is grabbing 3.3 rebounds while connecting on 48.3 percent of his shots from the field. He has reached double figures in scoring seven times, including five times in the last eight games. In that span, he has averaged 11.3 points and 6.1 rebounds while connecting on 52.3 percent of his shots (34-of-65).

Smith-Rivera, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, leads Georgetown, and ranks fifth in the BIG EAST, with 15.5 points per game. He has scored at least 20 points six times this season and has 17 career 20+ games. Smith-Rivera also ranks among the BIG EAST leaders in assists (3.3/game) and three-point field goals (50) and three-point percentage (38.8%).

Senior center Joshua Smith (Kent, Wash./Kentwood/UCLA) is second on the team in scoring with 11.3 points and leads the team with 6.3 rebounds. Smith, who was named to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award Watch List on Monday, also ranks first in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, connecting on 64.3 percent of his shots from the floor (99-of-154). Senior guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) has been one of the team's most consistent players this season as he is fourth on the team in scoring (8.4 ppg), second in assists (2.2 apg) and fourth in rebounding (3.9 rpg). Senior forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) is scoring 4.6 points per game, but is second on the team with 5.7 rebounds and leads the team with 1.6 blocked shots per game, which ranks fourth in the league.

Copeland is one of four freshmen playing significant minutes this year, joined by Peak, who has started all but one game. Peak is third on the team in scoring with 8.9 points and is contributing 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists, while forward Paul White (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) is seventh on the team with 5.5 points and 3.0 rebounds and freshman guard Tre Campbell (Washington, D.C./St. John's College HS) is averaging 3.1 points and 1.1 rebounds. Georgetown's freshmen have combined to average 24.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.1 steals per game. They have accounted for 37.3 percent of the team's minutes played (1830 of 4900) and for 33.4 percent of the team's scoring (575 of 1719 points).

The game with St. John's will be the 102nd all-time between the long-time BIG EAST Conference rivals. The series with St. John's is the longest in program history. The Hoyas trail the all-time series, 54-47, but have own six of the last seven games between the teams. Under Head Coach John Thompson III, Georgetown has a 13-5 record against the Red Storm.
