SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-23, 2-13 BIG EAST) lost, 95-68, to the Seton Hall University Pirates (23-4, 12-3 BIG EAST) at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J., on Friday. Turnovers made the difference as the Blue & Gray gave it away too many times.
Sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) led the way with a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, she was also 8-of-10 from the line. Freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 18 points and five boards going a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) rounded out those in double figures with 10 points in the game.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Pirates, 44-37, but shot just 39 percent (24-for-61) from the field to SHU's 48 percent (31-for-64). Turnovers proved costly as Georgetown committed 29 and SHU managed 39 points off of turnovers.
The Hoyas scored first on an Adomako jumper, but fouls proved costly as two starters quickly had to sit with a pair of fouls each. The Pirates put on the full-court press, but it worked in GU's favor as the Blue & Gray got buckets off the press to tie it at 11 as junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) hit a trey and Woodard drove the lane.
Free throws allowed Seton Hall to regain the lead and the press began to force turnovers as the pace increased and SHU had an 11-2 run. The momentum was in the Pirate's favor, until Woodard took a charge after a turnover to swing it back to GU.
Despite getting shots, the Hoyas couldn't connect and SHU continued to build the lead. The press wore on the Blue & Gray resulting in Pirate layups to make it 34-15 with seven minutes to go in the first.
With Adomako and Vitalis reentering the contest, the Hoyas gained some points in the paint. However, the Pirates heated up from beyond the arc.
Woodard and Adomako combined from the line late in the half as the Blue & Gray began to attack. Georgetown went into the break trailing, 57-30.
Woodard was a bright spot for GU with 13 points, seven rebounds and taking two charges on defense. The different was in turnovers as GU committed 18 and Seton Hall had 24 points off turnovers.
The giveaways continued in the second half as the pace continued, but the Blue & Gray couldn't get something going. Woodard continued to score, but it wasn't enough as Seton Hall found an answer every time.
With nine minutes remaining in the game, the Hoyas staged an 11-0 run sparked by a 3-pointer from Horne. The run made it 85-57, but that would be as close as GU would come to getting back in the game.
Seton Hall continued to battle and the Blue & Gray eventually fell, 95-68.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Sunday at St. John's University. The game is scheduled to tip at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
