QUEENS, N.Y. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-23, 2-13 BIG EAST) fell, 75-61, to the St. John's University Red Storm (18-8, 9-6 BIG EAST) at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y., on Sunday. Georgetown cut it to four late in the second half, but couldn't find the answer for the comeback.
Junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds for her third-career double-double. Freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 16 points and five boards, while junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) rounded out those in double figures with 10 points in the game.
The Hoyas were outrebounded by the Red Storm, 36-32, and shot just 38.2 percent (21-for-55) from the field to SJU's 50.0 percent (28-for-56). St. John's held a narrow margin on turnovers with 21, while GU committed 26.
The defense was active early, forcing turnovers, but couldn't convert that into points on the other end. As GU fought to stay in it, fouls began to add up on defense, allowing the Red Storm to take a lead from the line.
A 7-0 SJU run allowed the Red Storm to take the 27-14 lead, but it was stopped by a turnaround jumper from Battle on the baseline.
Turnovers and second-chance points plagued the Blue & Gray as St. John's continued to build its lead. In the final two minutes of the half, GU managed some points with Adomako and junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) both finding the bottom of the net to make it 41-24 at the break.
Rebounds made the difference as St. John's held a 25-11 advantage in the first on the glass. Vitalis led the way in scoring for Georgetown with nine points, while Adomako had eight.
Early in the second, the Hoyas began to chip away at the lead with four points from sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) to cut the lead to 12, 45-33. The Red Storm answered, but the Blue & Gray continued to battle trying to get the deficit into single digits.
A Vitalis layup cut it again to 12, 51-39, at 14:12 and junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) took a charge as well as a block on defense. Despite the stops, GU struggled to make SJU pay for it on the other end to keep it a 12-point deficit until McCormick nailed a 3-pointer to make it 53-42 with 11:26 to play.
Freshman center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) got a layup and after an Adomako steal, Battle converted four-consecutive free throws to cut it to six, 54-48. The defense came up with a stop and Battle converted another down low to make it a four-point game with 9:31 to go.
SJU ended the 8-0 run with a pair of free throws, but all of a sudden GU was right back in the game with nine minutes to go. Another Battle layup cut it to four again, 56-52, but the Red Storm answered with an 8-0 run to push the lead back to 12.
From that point on, the Hoyas needed stops and could not get them late eventually falling, 75-61.
