Feb. 26, 2015

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-24, 2-14 BIG EAST) will have a pair of BIG EAST Conference games this weekend to close out the 2014-15 regular season. The Hoyas will host the Creighton University Bluejays (16-11, 9-7 BIG EAST) at McDonough Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, GU will travel to Providence College to take on the Friars (5-22, 2-14 BIG EAST) in a noon matchup.

On Monday, freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Adomako earned her first nod to the weekly honor roll after leading Georgetown with averages of 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in games against Seton Hall and St. John's.

GU lost, 95-68, to the Seton Hall University Pirates in South Orange, N.J., on Friday. Sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) led the way with a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, she was also 8-of-10 from the line. Adomako added 18 points and five boards going a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) rounded out those in double figures with 10 points in the game.

The Hoyas outrebounded the Pirates, 44-37, but shot just 39 percent (24-for-61) from the field to SHU's 48 percent (31-for-64). Turnovers proved costly as Georgetown committed 29 and SHU managed 39 points off of turnovers.

Georgetown fell, 75-61, to the St. John's University Red Storm at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday. Georgetown cut it to four late in the second half, but couldn't find the answer for the comeback.

Vitalis led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds for her third-career double-double. Adomako added 16 points and five boards, while junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) rounded out those in double figures with 10 points in the game.

The Hoyas were outrebounded by the Red Storm, 36-32, and shot just 38.2 percent (21-for-55) from the field to SJU's 50.0 percent (28-for-56). St. John's held a narrow margin on turnovers with 21, while GU committed 26.

Adomako is leading the team in scoring with 13.4 ppg and has posted a squad-high 6.9 rpg. Vitalis is second with 9.3 ppg as well as 6.4 rpg and junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) rounds out the top three with 8.3 ppg.

Georgetown holds a +3.1 rebounding margin over opponents and is shooting 36.5 percent on the season.

Led by senior Alexis Akin-Otiko's 17 points, Creighton defeated Marquette, 82-60, on Sunday. The Bluejays are in sixth place in the league heading into the final weekend of conference play. The squad is led by Marissa Janning who is averaging 16.1 ppg, she is one of three Bluejays averaging double figures.

Georgetown is 0-3 all-time against the Bluejays falling, 76-61, in the first meeting earlier this season in Omaha, Neb. GU opened the second half with a huge run, but couldn't keep the momentum to eventually fall. Battle led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Adomako added 13 points and four boards. Freshman center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) was huge in the paint with 19 rebounds in the contest along with 10 points to round out those in double figures.

The Friars will be fighting for one of the two three spots in the BIG EAST Tournament. Last Sunday, Providence fell to DePaul, 103-66. Freshman guard Alison Lewis led four Friars in double figures with 15 points. Twelve of her 15 points came in the second half. Turnovers played a major factor in the game, as Providence committed a season-high 39 miscues and DePaul turned the ball over 20 times. DePaul out-scored Providence 53-14 in points off of turnovers.

The Hoyas are 27-28 all-time against the Friars and 26-28 in BIG EAST Conference play. In the first meeting this season at McDonough Arena, the Blue & Gray won, 69-61. The Hoyas had four players in double figures with Horne leading the way scoring 18 points and pulling in seven boards.
