WASHINGTON - Senior attack Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and freshman attack Stephen Quinzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) each scored three goals, as the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (1-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) held off a late rally to defeat Hofstra (1-3, 0-0 CAA), 13-11, on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field.
The Hoyas opened the game on a 4-0 run, as senior attack Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) found O'Connor on two goals. Quinzi and sophomore midfielder Peter Conley (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) each scored to aid GU's fast start. Freshman goalie Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) had a career-high 17 saves in his first collegiate victory.
Stafford and freshman midfielder Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) each had three assists and graduate student Gabriel Mendola (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca[Harvard]) won 14-of-28 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls, while sophomore long stick middie Charlie Ford (San Carlos, Calif./St. Ignatius) picked up six ground balls.
O'Connor started the scoring at 11:52 mark in the first quarter. Quinzi followed at the 9:25 mark, before Stafford found O'Connor again two minutes later. Stafford finished the game with three assists. Conley scored on O'Connor's assist before Hofstra got on the board for the first time on Brier Davis's goal.
Stafford scored on one of Berge's assist to help GU to a 5-1 lead. The Pride battled back, using a four-goal run of its own to tie the score at five at the 7:36 mark in the second quarter.
Quinzi and O'Connor added late second quarter goals to send the Hoyas into halftime with a 7-5 lead.
The Hoyas and Pride traded goals to begin the third quarter before freshman midfielder Ryan Hursey (Finksburg, Md./Westminster)started a three-goal run. Conley and senior midfielder Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) each scored to give GU an 11-7 lead with 13:21 remaining in the game.
After a Hofstra goal, Quinzi and Stafford each scored once more to give GU a five-goal, 13-8, edge. It would be more than enough, as Georgetown survived three late goals from Hofstra to win 13-11.
The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, March 4 when they travel to Emmitsburg, Md. to take on Mount St. Mary's. Opening face-off with the Mountaineers is scheduled 4 p.m.
