WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad (4-20, 2-10 BIG EAST) fell, 64-48, to the Villanova University Wildcats (14-10, 8-4 BIG EAST) Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas will get back on the court next weekend with a pair of home contests.
"I was proud of our team's fight, I was proud that we played hard and we played through the end of the game," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "The second-half effort showed a lot of what we can do, we just have to make sure we come out ready and we put it all together."
Junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) led the Hoyas with 14 points and seven rebounds as well as a block and a steal. Freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added nine points, and both junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) posted eight points, respectively.
Georgetown outrebounded Villanova, 38-32, and had just 11 turnovers, while the Wildcats had five.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Horne got the Blue & Gray on the board with two-consecutive 3-pointers. At that point, Caroline Coyer took over for VU hitting from beyond the arc and building the lead to as much as 13, 22-9, midway through the half.
Georgetown battled, but couldn't stop the hot-shooting Wildcats as the lead continued to grow despite an uptick in offense from the Blue & Gray.
Late in the first half, Georgetown struggled to find the bottom of the net. The squad went into the break trailing, 38-17.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Wildcats, 21-20, but shot just 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from the floor. The Blue & Gray took care of the ball with just six turnovers, but the Wildcats were better with just one in the half and 51.9 percent (14-of-27) shooting from the field.
Villanova opened the second with a 5-0 run, but GU answered with layups from Vitalis and freshman point guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep). Vitalis scored eight of GU's first 12 points as the Blue & Gray looked for production inside.
A 3-pointer from junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) cut it under 20, 50-32, at the nine-minute mark in the half.
A late spurt including a three by Horne and a layup in transition from Vitalis cut it to 17, and at the one-minute mark, Burton went to the line and sank a pair of free throws to make it 61-46.
A Wildcat three was matched with another Vitalis layup as GU played to the final whistle, but fell, 64-48.
The second half was better with GU shooting 46.2 percent (12-of-26) and outscored the Wildcats, 31-26.
Georgetown will continue its homestand next weekend as the team hosts Xavier University on Friday and Butler University on Sunday. Friday's game is scheduled to tip at 8 p.m., and will be shown live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Live stats will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
