Hoyas Wrapup Weekend in Orlando with Victory over Indiana

March 1, 2015

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team defeated Indiana 7-2 on Sunday morning at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., to move to 6-5 on the season. The Hoyas' two Saturday games against Mississippi State and Fordham were called due to rain.

Senior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) got the win in the circle for the Blue & Gray, pitching the full game and striking out eight. Hyson is 5-1 this year.

A Hyson single to the infield in the top of the first inning scored Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) for the first run of the game. Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored following a single up the middle by Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) and Hyson reached home following an error by the Hoosiers third baseman as the Hoyas jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.

The Blue & Gray added to the lead in the top of the second inning as Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) scored thanks to a single to the infield by Giovanniello. The Hoosiers got on the board in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1, but the Hoyas would hold them hitless for the third and fourth innings.

The lead increased to 5-1 as Kane scored her second run of the game after a single by Giovanniello to left field in the top of the fourth inning.

The Hoyas could not be stopped as they added another two runs in the top of the fifth. Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) singled to left center, which scored younger sister Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida and a double to centerfield by Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) brought in Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida and made the score 7-1.

The Hoosiers scored their second run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 7-2, a score that would be the final.

Georgetown will return to Florida next weekend as they will travel to Tampa for the Under Armour Showcase March 6-8.
