WASHINGTON - Despite two solo home runs from Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/Jack C. Hays) the Georgetown Hoyas fell to the Drexel Dragons, 5-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. The loss moves the Hoyas to 12-16 going into the weekend series against BIG EAST foe Creighton.
After a quiet first inning for both teams, Drexel was first on the board following a solo shot into right field that put the Dragons up 1-0. Georgetown responded shortly thereafter, however, as a single through the left side by Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) scored Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) to tie the game at 1-1.
Drexel added a run in the top of the third inning to go up 2-1 and added an additional two runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase its lead 4-1.
Ramsey hit her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth, a solo shot through the right side, to close the Dragons lead to 4-2, but Drexel would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make the score 5-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ramsey hit her second home run of the game, but it wouldn't be enough for the Hoyas. Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) got on base following a bunt, but GU would go pop up, fly, and ground out to end the inning with 5-3 as the final.
Ramsey and Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) led the team with two hits apiece while four other Hoyas recorded a hit.
Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and Avery Geehr (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) all saw time in the circle for the Blue & Gray.
The Hoyas are back in action this weekend as they host Creighton for a three-game series at Guy Mason Field. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
