WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team will host the Creighton Bluejays this weekend for a three-game series at Guy Mason Field. Due to forecasted weather through the night, the teams will play one game on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The series will wrap up on Sunday with a doubleheader. First pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
It is the second BIG EAST series for both teams as the Hoyas took two-of-three from Villanova, and the Bluejays dropped two of their three games against the Butler Bulldogs last weekend. The Hoyas stand at 12-16 overall and 2-1 in league play, while Creighton is 14-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
GU is looking to rebound from a midweek loss against Drexel at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in Southeast D.C., on Wednesday afternoon. Despite getting a season and single-game high two home runs from Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/Jack C. Hays) the Hoyas were unable to overcome and early deficit and fell 5-3 to the Dragons.
Ramsey and Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) were the two Hoyas who recorded two hits for GU in the loss. The two hits move Giovanniello's season total to a team-high 28. The game versus the Dragons was also the seventh time in 2015 that Giovanniello recorded multiple hits in a game.
On the season, Giovanniello is second on the team in batting average, she is hitting at a .308 clip. In addition to her 28 hits, she has 16 RBI to her name and is slugging .440. The junior currently leads the league in doubles with seven.
Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) leads the team in RBI with 20. She is fourth on the team with a total of 21 hits and owns four doubles, a triple and a team-high three home runs.
Senior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) has taken the majority of the starts in the circle for the Hoyas this season and owns a record of 9-6. Over 99.2 innings of work, she has a BIG EAST leading 103 strikeouts and her ERA of 2.39 is fourth in the conference.
Creighton comes to the D.C. having dropped two of its last three games. Prior to the team's BIG EAST opening loss to Butler, the Bluejays had rattled off nine-straight wins in which they outscored their opponents 60-6.
The Bluejays are led by Liz Dike who is hitting .434 with 30 hits, 27 RBI and six home runs. Her batting average is first in the conference. Dike is also nine-of-10 in stolen bases in 2015.
In the circle, Micaela Whitney has a win-loss record of 8-4 and an ERA of 1.73, the second best in the league. Whitney has 57 strikeouts to her name.
Overall, Creighton's team batting average of .289 is third in the BIG EAST.
