Hoyas Head to Philadelphia for Penn Relays

April 22, 2015

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown track & field team heads to Philadelphia for the 2015 Penn Relay Carnival, held at historic Franklin Field this Thursday, April 23 through Saturday, April 25. The Hoyas will compete in six relays and five individual events over the three-day meet.

The Hoyas will compete in the six distance Championship of America relays including the men's and women's distance medley relay (DMR), men's and women's 4x800-meter relay, the men's 4xmile relay and the women's 4x1,500-meter relay.

Additionally the Hoyas will put runners in four different sections of the men's and women's 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs as well as a competitor in the men's long jump.

The first relays up for the men and the women will be the DMR. The women will hit the track on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., utilizing a foursome of All-Americans in Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy), Becca DeLoache (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), Piper Donaghu (Portland, Ore./Grant) and Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo). Pairing youth and experience, all four have familiarity in the event at elite levels, all competing at the NCAA Championships within the last two years.

The women's program has two DMR Championship of America wheels, winning its first in 1996 and the second in 2011. The 2011 championship foursome clocked 10:51.49 in the event, a time that stands as the fifth-fastest in Penn Relays history.

The men's DMR will compete on Friday at 2:30 p.m., with a foursome of All-Americans in Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Country Day), Billy Ledder (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga), Joe White (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and Cole Williams (San Francisco, Calif./Occidental College). The quartet is no stranger to elite levels of competition, placing fourth at the 2015 NCAA Championships, the best finish for a GU DMR at nationals since 2006, another fourth-place finish.

The men's track & field team have claimed six DMR Championship of America wheels in its storied history with, starting with back-to-back wins in 1922 and 1923, followed wins in 1951, 1982, 1987 and the most recent one in 1990.

The 1987 DMR squad of John Trautmann, Darron Outler, Miles Irish and Mike Stahr clocked 9:20.96, a mark that still ranks as the second-fastest time in Penn Relays history. That DMR foursome was inducted in to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame in 2007 and Truatmann and Stahr have been inducted in to the Wall of Fame as individual athletes in 2002 and 2014, respectively.

In addition to action at Franklin Field, the Blue & Gray will have much to celebrate as former GU All-American, Penn Relays and NCAA Champion John Gregorek (C'82) will become the fifth individual to be inducted in to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame as he was named to the Class of 2015 earlier this month. Gregorek joins Trautmann and Stahr as well as Arthur Duffey (inducted 1999) and Aubrey McKithen (inducted 2012).
