No. 25/RV Hoyas Down Radford, 5-2

Sept. 12, 2015

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The No. 25/RV Georgetown University men's soccer squad (2-2-1) used a total team effort to down the Radford University Highlanders (3-1-1), 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas handed the Highlanders their first loss of the season and made it two in a row at Shaw Field.

"There were a lot of really good moments in the game today," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "I thought the difference in today's game as opposed to some of the other games we've had so far is that we were much more clinical in our finishing and that makes the game much easier."

With the rain pouring down, the Hoya offense wasn't fazed as senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) was feeling it early.

In the 13th minute, Allen received the ball at the top of the box and dribbled to his left curling through the defense before firing to the far post and beating keeper Aitor Pauseu Blanco to make it 1-0. It marked Allen's first goal of the season after two assists in the game prior.

It took just one minute for Allen to tally his second as sloppy play in the back by the Highlanders allowed junior midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) to intercept. He was pulled down in the box resulting in the penalty kick which Allen buried to make it 2-0 just 13 minutes into the contest.

In the 32nd minute, junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) scored his first of the game as sophomore midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) sent it to senior midfielder David Witkoff (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) who tapped it to Muyl at the top right corner of the box. Muyl sent it far point to make it 3-0.

The rain let up, but a lightning delay forced the teams to leave the field for 30 minutes before play resumed and Radford seemed to have the upper hand early. A handball in the box changed the game in the 39th minute as a long throw in resulted in the penalty kick and the Highlander goal.

Georgetown regained the three-goal lead after a golden opportunity from a free kick resulted in a corner. GU didn't score off of the corner, but on the ensuing possession, Basuljevic slipped it to Muyl who turned to his left. Muyl found sophomore midfielder Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) in the middle of the box who shot to the right post and beat the keeper to make it 4-1.

Freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) kept it 4-1 in the final minute of the first as the Highlanders got a number of shots off, but he held on to make it 4-1 at the break.

Georgetown continued the dominance with a goal early in the second. Freshman midfielder Edson Martinez (Salem, Ore./North Salem) slipped it to Allen who sent it to the near post where Muyl and sophomore Matthew Ledder (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) were charging. The ball was batted around with Blanco and the Hoyas and as Blanco went down, Muyl managed to get it in to make it 5-1 in the 52nd minute.

From this point on, the Hoya coaching staff had the opportunity to mix up the lineup and get some of the younger players game experience.

GU changed it up, but kept a level of play and, despite a final-minute goal from the Highlanders, eventually cruised to the 5-2 victory.

Muyl and Allen both finished the day with two goals and an assist each.

"Today was maybe the best performance I've seen from Alex Muyl in his career," said Wiese. "And Brandon has been very good. Brandon didn't score against UCLA, but he had two assists and was acting like a playmaker."

The Hoyas were outshot, 13-9, but took nine corner kicks to Radford's four. Marcinkowski was awarded the win in the net with four saves to his credit, while Blanco took the loss with one save on the afternoon.

The Blue & Gray will be back in action on Thursday as the squad opens a pair of road contests at Virginia Commonwealth University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., in Richmond, Va. Live stats and a webcast will be available at the VCU athletic website.
