WASHINGTON - The No. 25 Georgetown University men's soccer squad had big performances from junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) and sophomore midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to defeat the No. 11/13 University of Maryland Terrapins (3-2-3) on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas close out non-conference play with a mark of 4-2-2.
"Maryland is a great team, they're really tough, they're really deep and they have some great players," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "I'm very proud of the fact that we were able to win when we weren't really firing on all cylinders. You saw some tired legs out there today and, I'm not sure how we ended up winning, but I think it was a terrific individual performance by (Alex) Muyl. Arun (Basuljevic) played Alex a great through ball, and then Alex turned around and said well I'll scratch your back and then here you go. It was great for those guys."
In the 83rd minute with the score tied at one, junior defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) broke up a play and streaked through the midfield with the ball, before laying it off to senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph). Allen didn't get the shot off, but sent it to Muyl on the right side who took a perfect touch before serving it in.
Muyl's service went to the foot of Basuljevic cutting into the box. Basuljevic managed the expert finish for the go-ahead goal for the Blue & Gray to make it 2-1.
To open the game, the Terps took control of possession early as Maryland had better looks at the goal. Despite UMD looking dangerous, it was Georgetown with the look in the 12th minute as Muyl had an open net with a bouncing ball and couldn't volley it into the net as it sailed over the crossbar.
In the 27th minute, Maryland was awarded the first corner kick of the game and it resulted in a dangerous header that went inches high to keep it scoreless.
The Terps took over the final two minutes of the half firing into the Georgetown box, but the defense stood strong to keep it 0-0 going into the break.
Hoya freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) was the only one tested in the first with three saves to his credit.
The Hoyas had the first look of the second half as a shot from junior forward Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) was blocked and Allen fired the rebound to the left post forcing UMD keeper Cody Niedermeier to dive for his first save of the contest.
Maryland had a spurt, but it was GU that got on the board first in the 53rd minute. It started with Allen back heeling the ball to Basuljevic who sent it to Muyl on the right side. Muyl beat his defender 1v1 and was all alone against Niedermeier. The junior fired to the far post and finished perfectly to make it 1-0 in favor of the Hoyas.
The Terps evened the score in the 69th minute as a defensive miscue allowed Sebastian Elney to shoot into the empty net as Marcinkowski was caught off his line to tie it at one.
This set up the go-ahead goal for the Blue & Gray as Muyl and Basuljevic combined once again for the late-game heroics resulting in the 2-1 decision.
The Hoyas outshot the Terps, 16-13, and took four corner kicks to Maryland's three. Marcinkowski was awarded the win in the net with five saves to his credit, while Niedermeier took the loss with three saves in the game.
