WASHINGTON - The No. 25 Georgetown University men's soccer team (5-2-2, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) used a second-half goal from junior forward Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) to defeat the Providence College Friars (4-3-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST), 1-0, in the BIG EAST Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field.

"A lot of our attacking pieces have been finding ways to get goals and this was a hard match to find it," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "It was great to get the shutout, which was long overdue, but today was another example of the guys evolving."

The Hoyas possessed for much of the first half sending the ball side to side looking for an opening. The Blue & Gray had a good chance just minutes in during a scramble in the box forcing Providence keeper Ben Seguljic to dive keeping it scoreless.

With one minute to play, sophomore midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had the final chance of the half driving an open shot just high, but the teams went into the break scoreless. Freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) had a quiet half facing no shots.

It was Providence that opened the half with momentum as Manny Andrade had a run on the left side forcing Marcinkowki to make the save. The rebound went back into the box and Marcinkowski got a hand on it to stop it before the defense managed to clear the ball.

It all changed in the 64th minute as a run from junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) went to senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) at the top of the box. He tapped it once more to Campbell who fired from 18-yards out with his left foot and into the back of the net as Seguljic couldn't get a hand on it to make it 1-0.

Minutes later, it was Muyl again dribbling into the box and passing it to a charging Matthew Ledder (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) whose shot from point blank range was blocked by the defense as a scrum ensued in front of the goal.

In the 80th minute, Providence had three quick chances off of a dangerous free kick as Marcinkowski saved the first, senior defender Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) blocked the second and the third went off the post.

The Friars continued to pressure as four-consecutive PC corner kicks were thwarted, but with just seven minutes to go the Hoyas needed to regain possession to slow the Friar offense.

Late in the game, both squads had chances as Providence searched for the equalizer and the Blue & Gray tried to close out the contest. Georgetown managed to hold on and kept the 1-0 shutout at the final whistle.

Georgetown outshot Providence, 11-8, and took seven corner kicks to the Friars' four. Seguljic took the loss in the net with five saves, while Marcinkowski notched his second-career shutout posting four saves in the game.

After four games in just 10 days, the Hoyas will have the week off before continuing BIG EAST Conference play at Xavier University next Saturday.

"It's been an interesting stretch because we haven't really been able to train," said Wiese. "All we've been able to do is play a game and get ready for the next one. It's nice to go into a week break with momentum feeling pretty good about where you are."

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Live stats will also be available through the Musketeers' athletic website.
