Oct. 13, 2016 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown women's tennis team will open play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals on Friday at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va., on the campus of Old Dominion University.
Three Hoyas were selected to play in the main draw, and two pairs earned a spot in the doubles main draw.
Senior Victoire Saperstein (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School), junior Sara Swift (Vail, Colo./Saint Edward's School), and sophomore Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) will all play in the main draw at the event. Additionally, sophomores Cecilla Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md./Holton Arms School) and Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va./Langley High School) were selected to appear in the qualifying draw.
Saperstein is 1-2 this fall after coming back from an injury. Last year, she was an All-BIG EAST honoree and went 11-5 at No. 1 singles.
Nakagawa had a breakout rookie season earning All-BIG EAST honors, and has continued that into her sophomore year. She played in the championship at the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic Tennis Championships taking on some of the best teams in the area. This fall, she is 8-2 overall, and last year went 11-3 at No. 2 singles.
Swift was recently third in the Colorado Invitational. She went 3-1 on the day falling in the semifinals before taking the third-place match. This fall, she has gone 6-2 in singles play. She was all over the lineup last season going 10-4 in dual matches.
In doubles play, the pair of Saperstein and Nakagawa will be one of the seeded teams in the main draw. The duo will be seeded between No. 9-16. Also playing is the pair of junior Casey Marx (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior Sophia Barnard (Mill Neck, N.Y./Portledge School).
Saperstein and Nakagawa have played together once this fall advancing to the semifinals of the Bedford Cup before falling to teammates Marx and Barnard.
This fall, Saperstein and Nakagawa are 2-1. Last year, the pair went 18-6 overall.
Marx and Barnard are a perfect 4-0 this fall.
Play will begin on Friday.
