Georgetown Swimming & Diving Swept by Towson

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University swimming & diving teams both fell in a dual meet at Towson University on Saturday afternoon at the Tigers' Burdick Pool. The men fell, 171-126, while the Hoya lost, 158-142.

Men
Henry Hollinshead (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) took home Georgetown's lone win of the meet, winning the 200-yard backstroke with a personal-best time of 1:53.25. He also took more than a second off of his personal best in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 52.43 to place second by less than a half second.

Daniel Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall just .36 seconds out of first with a time of 1:45.48. He surpassed his previous season-best time by more than a second. He also placed second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:14.04. Evan Grey (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) and Samuel Delise (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) took third and fourth with times of 4:14.36 and 4:21.34, respectively.

In the 50-yard freestyle, the Georgetown trio of Will Leach (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), Seth Maslowski (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) and Emmanuel Emovon (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Wando) finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Leach touched the wall in 22.00 seconds, just .28 out of first, while Maslowski and Emovon were just two-hundredths of a second apart from each other.

Leach also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.66.

Martin Vanin (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar), Emovon and Justin Summers (Weston, Conn./Weston) took second, third and fourth, respectively in the 100-yard butterfly. Vanin took nearly a second off of his season-best time, touching the wall in 51.69 seconds.

Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey), Jared Cooper-Vespa (Orange, Conn./The Hopkins School) and Griffin Edmonds (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) swept the top three spots in the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Blom won the 1-meter with 273 points while Cooper-Vespa finished first in the 3-meter with 297.90 points.

Women
Cristina Barrett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) continued the hot start to her collegiate career. For the third time in as many meets, she not only swept but also improved her times in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle races. She won the 500 in a time of 5:03.48, taking .61 seconds off her personal best. She also took more than three seconds off her time in the 1,000, touching the wall in 10:17.22.

Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) just outstretched her opponent in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning by just .03 seconds to win in 1:07.01. She also won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.74.

Christine Ryan (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) won a sprint to the end in the 200-yard freestyle, outstretching her opponent by just .05 seconds to win in 1:57.11.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Molly Gaynor (Scotch Plains, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) touched the wall first in a 59.07 to win by margin of just .25 seconds.

Morgan Conley (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) also won a tight race in the 50-yard freestyle, winning by .05 seconds with a time of 24:37.

Katie Duncalf (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.57, and placed second in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 2:07.60.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Conly, Kelleigh Haley (Potomac, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart), Lauren Rutledge (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Bailey Page (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) were also involved in a tight race, winning by a margin of just .05 seconds in 1:37.70. The Hoyas were behind by eight seconds after the third leg, but Page swam the final 50 yards in 24.30 seconds for the come-from-behind win.

Georgetown will return to the pool on Saturday, October 29 when it hosts Davidson in a dual meet at McCarthy Pool.
