WASHINGTON - Junior Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) and freshman Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) won the C flight as the Georgetown University men's tennis squad competed at the Farnsworth Invitational this weekend in Princeton, N.J., at the Jadwin Indoor Center. The pair won their draw, and a number of Hoyas had success as the Blue & Gray gears up for ITA Regional this week.
Rechan and Witmer opened doubles play with a win over Max McDonald and Max Haase from Bucknell University, 8-6. In the quarterfinals, the pair took an 8-4 victory over Salomon Koster and Danilo Vukotic from Farleigh Dickinson University. The team then coasted to a semifinal win over Daniil Ginzburg and Balaji Lakshmanan from Drexel University, 8-5. In the championship, Rechan and Witmer won against a mixed team from two schools with the 8-6 victory.
Senior Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) and junior Bart Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) also advanced to the quarterfinals of the C flight with an 8-4 victory in the first round, before losing, 8-3, in the next round.
In singles play, Georgetown had success in the Pagoda Draw. Panarese and Murphy both made it to the semifinals.
Panarese defeated Javier Allende from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 6-0, 6-0 and then took down Miki Nobuzawa from FDU by a score of 6-1, 6-2. He fell in the semifinals in a three-set battle, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
Murphy defeated Max Darrington from Marist College, 6-1, 6-2 before beating Alex Roszkowski from St. John's University by a score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Murphy lost in the semifinals 7-5, 6-4.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Wednesday as the squad opens up play at ITA Regionals in Blacksburg, Va.
