Nov. 12, 2016 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (1-0) will travel to Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies (1-0) at 4 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum. The contest marks GU's first road matchup of the season and begins a seven-game road swing for the Blue & Gray.
Georgetown outscored the George Washington University Colonials, 32-9, in the fourth quarter to open the 2016-17 season with a 72-57 victory on Friday evening at McDonough Arena. Senior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) and junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) both posted double-doubles to help the Hoyas win their ninth-consecutive season opener.
Trailing by eight entering the fourth quarter, the Blue & Gray cut it to three and then staged a 23-2 run to close out the game over the final 5:27 to pick up the victory. Adomako managed 11 points in the run and Georgetown was a perfect 14-of-14 from the line in the final stanza to push for the comeback win.
Woodard led the Hoyas with 22 points and 11 rebounds going 9-of-10 from the free throw line, while Adomako posted 20 points and 11 rebounds shooting 8-of-10 from the charity stripe and tallying three assists. Rounding out those in double figures was junior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) who scored 11 points and tallied a team-best five assists while going 4-of-5 from the line.
The Colonials shot 41.7 percent (20-for-48) from the field, while the Blue & Gray managed just 33.3 percent (21-for-63) shooting. Georgetown outrebounded GW, 44-33, and forced 21 Colonial turnovers.
Virginia Tech opened its season with a 71-52 win Friday afternoon over UNC Asheville at Cassell Coliseum. Behind a solid defensive performance that forced 18 turnovers, the Hokies overcame a slow start and gradually worked back into the game by converting baskets down low with 42 points in the paint. Sophomore Chanette Hicks led the Hokies with a career-high 24 points while scooping up three steals on the defensive side. Regan Magarity chipped in 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Samantha Hill dropped in 11. Sidney Cook rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10.
The win was the first for new Head Coach Kenny Brooks.
The Hoyas are 3-4 all-time against the Hokies and 0-2 in Blacksburg. The last meeting was last season, a 73-56 victory at McDonough Arena. Adomako scored 19 points in the win, and Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) added 16. Prior to that, the team met during the 2003-04 season when the Hokies were members of the BIG EAST Conference. Georgetown won, 70-50, at home during the regular season, but fell in the conference tournament by a score of 56-47.
