Box Score

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (1-1) dropped its first game of the 2016-17 season falling, 73-63, to the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0) in Blacksburg, Va., on Sunday at Cassell Coliseum. The Hoyas led much of the way, but couldn't slow a Hokie fourth-quarter comeback.

"Any time you give any opponent 40 free throw attempts, you'll make it tough on yourself. They shot more free throws than they did field goals," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "We just have to get better. We're going to work on defense and get ready for the next game."

Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the Hoyas with 19 points. She also had a team-best six assists, four steals and two blocks as well as five rebounds to stuff the stat sheet. Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) posted 14 points and a squad-high eight rebounds, while senior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) rounded out those in double figures with 11 points.

The Hoyas pulled down 35 boards and shot 38.4 percent (28-of-73) from the field, while the Hokies shot 45.5 percent (20-for-44) from the field and managed 32 rebounds. Georgetown committed just 10 turnovers and forced 11 by Virginia Tech.

Georgetown started the game running going up by five, 10-5, on a pair of free throws and a layup by Woodard. The defense was getting stops and turning that into fast-break points on the other end.

Following the first media timeout, the Hokies came out and hit a 3-pointer as well as a free throw to take an 11-10 lead. They managed a 9-0 run to go up by as much as four, while fouls hurt the Hoyas and allowed VT to gain momentum.

Adomako ended the run with a jumper on the baseline and this sparked an 11-3 run over the final 1:30 of the first quarter. Senior guard Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) hit a trey, White picked a Hokie's pocket and converted the three-point play on the break, and then sank a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to help GU end the first quarter leading, 23-18.

White continued to dominate on both ends of the floor to start the second as the Blue & Gray looked to build the lead. However, the Hokies weren't going away staying within two possessions for much of the quarter. Every time VT had momentum, Adomako or White calmed the crowd with a jumper to keep the Hokies at bay. Georgetown went into the break leading 37-33.

Georgetown continued to hold off every Hokie attack as the third quarter began. Fouls kept it close throughout, and at 3:08 Virginia Tech tied it at 49 on a layup. Freshman center Olivia Ramil (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) answered with a layup of her own, but it would prove to be a tight one for the remainder of the quarter. A Belk layup in the final 30 seconds made it 53-51 in favor of the Hoyas at the end of the third.

Four-consecutive points from Sidney Cook as well as a pair of free throws put the Hokies up by four, 57-53, to begin the final stanza. The Blue & Gray fought back keeping it a one-possession game.

In the final five minutes of play, fouls made the difference as Virginia Tech hit from the line and the Hoyas couldn't answer on the other end. Georgetown was never able to find a way back and eventually fell, 73-63.

The Hoyas will continue their seven-game road swing as the squad travels to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday at 5 p.m. ET. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
