Nov. 2, 2016 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University women's soccer player Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) was named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Year and six other Hoyas were selected to All-BIG EAST teams, including three on the first team.
Georgetown, 15-2-2 overall and ranked No. 7 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and No. 7 in the Soccer America poll, advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals on Tuesday with a 4-0 win over Butler in a quarterfinal game.
The Hoyas, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, advance to play No. 2 seed DePaul on Friday, November 4 at 2 p.m. in one of two semifinal matches, both being played at Shaw Field on Georgetown's campus. The first semifinal features No. 1 seed Marquette against No. 4 seed St. John's at 11:30 a.m.
Junior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry), senior forward Grace Damaska (Marietta, Ga./Blessed Trinity) and graduate defender Marina Paul (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Laguna Beach) each were selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while graduate forward Crystal Thomas (Elgin, Ill./Wheaton Academy/Notre Dame), sophomore goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) and junior defender Elizabeth Wenger (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) were selected to the All-BIG EAST Second team. Carolan earned a unanimous spot on the All-Freshman Team.
Carolan is the fifth Georgetown player to earn a major award from the BIG EAST and she is the second Hoya to be named the league's Freshman of the Year, joining Ingrid Wells, who won it in 2007. The redshirt freshman has been a key figure in a Georgetown offense that ranks among the best in the country. She is fourth on the team in scoring with 21 points, scoring nine goals and adding three assists. In BIG EAST play, she was second on the team with five goals. Carolan scored two goals in the win over Butler on Tuesday, her third game this season with at least two goals.
Corboz earns All-BIG EAST First Team honors for the second-straight year and this is her fourth all-league accolade, as she was a second team and All-Freshman selection in 2014. The junior, who was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year last year, is tied for the team lead in scoring with 29 points. Her 11 assists lead the BIG EAST and rank tied for No. 3 in the country.
Damaska is closing out her Georgetown career with her best season yet and earned her first all-league honor with a selection to the first team. The senior forward is tied for the team high with 29 points and leads the team with 12 goals scored. Her 12 goals are tied for the third-most in a single season at Georgetown, lead the BIG EAST and rank tied for No. 25 in the country.
Paul earns her second All-BIG EAST First Team nod and the third all-league honor of her career, as she was a first team honoree in 2014 and an All-Freshman member in 2012. After missing most of last season with an injury, she has come back this season and appeared in every game, while helping to anchor a back line that recorded 12 shutouts and was among the stingiest in conference play, allowing only five goals.
This is the third time that Thomas has been selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and her second honor at Georgetown. She was an All-BIG EAST selection in 2015 and was also named second team and all-rookie in 2012 as a freshman at Notre Dame. Thomas is third on the team in scoring with 21 points, second on the team with 10 goals and led the Hoyas in scoring in conference play with six goals and one assist for 13 points.
Schechtman has started every game in goal for Georgetown and carries a 15-2-2 record with a 0.63 goals-against average and 55 saves. She has been named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week twice this season and her 12 shutouts are second all-time in a single season at Georgetown.
This is the second-straight year that Wenger has earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. The junior, who leads the team in minutes played, was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week twice during the season.
Under Head Coach Dave Nolan, Georgetown has had 10 different players earn 19 All-BIG EAST First Team honors, 17 different players earn 24 All-BIG EAST Second Team nods and 17 players earn all-rookie (freshman) accolades. Nolan has also had five players earn Player of the Year awards on 10 occasions.
