WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (8-2) continued its seven-game win streak with a 70-59 victory over the University of Alabama Crimson Tide (7-1) on Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena. It was Georgetown's final nonconference game of the season and also handed Alabama its first loss on the year.
"The team just wanted this game. They knew what this game meant and, we talk about our resume to March, everything matters," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "This group knows me and we've been together for a while now and I love them because they just fight and it doesn't matter who gets the credit. I was so proud of our bench when our starters got in foul trouble, and that's how it's been. I think these early road games have helped us grow up."
Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) led the way for the Hoyas with 20 points and posting four rebounds. Senior forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) managed her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards.
The Blue & Gray pulled down 33 rebounds to Alabama's 47, and shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) from the field, while the Crimson Tide shot 30.2 percent (19-for-63) from the field. Georgetown forced 19 turnovers on eight steals, but committed 16 turnovers in the contest.
Alabama opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and staged an 8-0 run before the Blue & Gray could get on the board with a three-point play from Adomako. This started a 16-0 run for the Hoyas as a trey from White tied it and an Adomako layup put Georgetown ahead.
The defense came up with big stops and the offense was finding open players in the paint as the Hoyas were clicking early in the game. Georgetown totaled an 18-2 run to end the first quarter as the Hoyas held the 18-10 advantage at the break. Junior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/- [Chipola College]) led the way with six points in the run.
Georgetown continued to build the lead in the second quarter as senior guard Jade Martin (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) posted up in the paint to make it 26-14 midway through.
In the final three minutes of the half, Alabama staged a small comeback cutting it to nine, 28-19. Martin stopped the momentum with some work down low and the Hoyas forced a travel on the other end. At the half, Georgetown led 34-23.
On two occasions, the Crimson Tide cut it to nine early in the third quarter. The Hoya defense forced turnovers and a layup from Woodard on the other end made Alabama call time out hoping to avoid another big Georgetown run.
Alabama continued to battle to get back within a possession and made it an eight-point deficit midway through, 40-32. GU followed a timeout with a stop and a trey from junior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep). Adomako then hit back-to-back jumpers to make it 47-34 as the Hoyas fought to keep the game out of reach for the Crimson Tide.
Fouls made a huge difference allowing Alabama opportunities to come back making it 53-44 at the end of the third.
A layup cut it to seven on the first possession of the fourth quarter, but Adomako answered with a trey. Despite the 3-pointer, it would be a battle down the stretch for the Hoyas as foul trouble put key players on the bench.
With the game heating up, it was senior guard Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook [Wake Forest]) to hit a jumper and a trey to give Georgetown some breathing room, 61-48. From that point on, Alabama wouldn't find an answer and the Hoyas cruised to the 70-59 victory.
The Hoyas will have a break until December 28 when the squad opens BIG EAST Conference play at McDonough Arena against DePaul at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats as well as a watch link will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
