WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior men's basketball player D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. This is the fifth-straight week he has been selected to the honor roll and the sixth time this season.
Georgetown hits the road this week for a pair of games, starting on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a visit to Indianapolis to play at Butler (14-7, 3-6 BIG EAST). Tipoff at Hinkle Fieldhouse is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on FOX Sports 1, with Gus Johnson calling the play-by-play and Bill Raftery serving as the color analyst. The game can be heard locally on 99.1 FM WNEW.
The Hoyas enter the game on Tuesday with a 13-9 overall record and a 6-3 mark in the BIG EAST Conference following a 73-69 loss on Saturday night to No. 10 Providence.
Smith-Rivera earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the fifth-straight week after averaging 18.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week. In a thrilling 74-73 win over Creighton last Tuesday, Smith-Rivera hit two free throws with 6.3 seconds left to cap a 15-3 run over the final two-plus minutes as Georgetown came back from an 11-point deficit.
The senior guard scored 19 points, grabbed three rebounds and had three assists and three steals in the win over Creighton. He followed that up with 18 points and five assists in the loss to Providence on Saturday.
One of the team's co-captains, he leads Georgetown in scoring with 16.4 points per game and in assists with 4.4 per game. DSR has hit a team-best 52 3-point field goals. He ranks third in the BIG EAST in scoring, tied for fifth in assists and third in 3-pointers made. In nine BIG EAST Conference games, he is second in the league with 18.8 points per game and second with 5.2 assists.
Smith-Rivera ranks ninth all-time in scoring at Georgetown with 1,747 points and he needs four points to pass Mike Sweetney ('03) for eighth and 15 to pass Austin Freeman ('11) for seventh place.
Sophomore guard L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) scored a team-high 19 points in the loss to Providence on Saturday. He is second on the team in scoring with 10.3 points per game. He has scored in double figures in four-straight games, averaging 13.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in that span.
Senior center Bradley Hayes (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) is fourth on the team in scoring with 8.7 points and leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game, which ranks 10th in the BIG EAST. He scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds against Providence, his fourth double-double of the season.
The game with Butler on Tuesday night will be the first meeting between the teams this season. Georgetown swept the season series last year, winning 61-59 at home on a 3-pointer from then-freshman forward Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Brewster Academy [N.H.]), and then posting a 60-54 win on the road. The Hoyas lead the all-time series between the teams 5-1 and have won four of the five meetings between the teams since Butler joined the BIG EAST Conference.
