Women's Basketball Opens Homestand Against Villanova

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (14-11, 7-8 BIG EAST) begin a three-game homestand this weekend, hosting Villanova University (16-11, 9-6 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Conference contest on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is slated for noon on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Sunday's game is also Georgetown's annual Kids Take Over McDonough event.

The Hoyas, winners of five of their past seven games, went 1-1 last weekend on the road. On Friday, the Blue & Gray defeated Seton Hall, 73-65, for its first win over the Pirates since the 2012-13 season. The Hoyas fell at St. John's on Sunday, 63-55.

Against Seton Hall, five different Hoyas scored in double figures and the Georgetown University women's basketball team used a 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter to pull away. Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) finished with a season-high 21 points, going 9-of-11 from the field, while grabbing eight rebounds. Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) nearly had a triple-double, scoring 12 points to go along with a career-high 12 assists and eight rebounds. DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) and Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./Saint Mary's Ryken) each chipped in 11 points, while Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) contributed 10 points. Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernad's) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Georgetown shot 50 percent (31-of-62) from the field, while holding the Pirates to just 35.8 percent (24-of-67). The Blue & Gray held an advantage in rebounding (46-32) as well as points in the paint (36-22) and fast break points (14-2).

On Sunday at St. John's, Georgetown closed to within four points with 48 seconds left, but could not complete the comeback. Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) returned after missing three games and was the lone Hoya in double figures, finishing with 12 points. White scored nine points while also contributing five assists and six steals. Battle and Tyshell King (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) each scored eight points and Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) had seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Hoyas finished the game shooting just 29.4 percent (20-of-68), while St. John's shot 40.9 percent (18-of-44). The Red Storm made 25 of their 32 free throw attempts while GU went just 13-of-23 from the charity stripe. Georgetown outrebounded St. John's, 43-42, and forced 20 turnovers on 12 steals. The Blue & Gray also held an advantage in points in the paint (24-22), points off of turnovers (20-15), second chance points (10-6), fast break points (10-2) and bench points (27-17).

For the season, White is leading the Hoyas in scoring with 14.6 ppg and has posted team highs of 6.0 rpg, 4.3 apg and 2.4 spg. She is among the BIG EAST leaders in all four categories, ranking sixth in scoring, 12th in rebounds, fifth in assists and first in steals. Adomako is second on the squad with 13.9 ppg and 5.8 rpg while Woodard rounds out the top three with 10.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg.

Georgetown is shooting 39.9 percent on the season while allowing opponents a BIG EAST-best 37.1 percent. GU also leads the league in rebounding (42.4 rpg), and rebounding margin (+4.3) and is second in blocks (5.1 bpg).

Villanova is holding on to third place in the BIG EAST with a 9-6 record against conference opponents. The Wildcats are coming off of a 60-50 loss at Seton Hall on Sunday after defeating St. John's, 71-59, on Friday. Senior guard Caroline Coyer leads the Wildcats in five different statistical categories, including scoring (14.5 ppg.), assists (4.6 apg), 3-pointers made (57), minutes played (35.6 mpg.) and steals (1.7 spg). Sophomore guard Alex Louin is second in scoring with 11.3 ppg while Megan Quinn leads Villanova with 6.2 rpg.

The Hoyas are 20-38 all-time against the Wildcats, but won when the two teams met in January, 57-51. It was Georgetown's first victory at The Pavilion since the 2011-12 season. In that game, GU outscored Villanova, 11-2 over the final 3:32 of the game to overcome a three-point deficit. White finished with game highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Adomako had 13 points and six rebounds, while Battle was also in double figures with 12 points off the bench.
