Newins, Smith Earn BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships

Feb. 23, 2016

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University seniors Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) and Matt Smith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) were named recipients of the 2015-16 BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships, presented by Sunkist.

Each institutional winner receives $2,000 toward graduate studies.

Newins, who graduated in December with a degree in accounting and finance and a minor in economics, helped lead the Georgetown women's soccer team to one of the most successful four year stretches in program history, with 70 wins. She earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors for the second-straight year. It was the fifth All-BIG EAST honor of her career, as she was named second team in 2014, third team in 2013 as well as second team and all-rookie in 2012.

During the 2015 season, when Georgetown finished with a 10-6-2 record and reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-straight year, she posted a 10-5-2 record with three shutouts and a 1.19 goals-against average. Newins is Georgetown's all-time leader in career shutouts (33).

Smith is coming off one of the best seasons in program history by a Georgetown pitcher. As a junior, Smith was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team after tying the program record with 78 strikeouts while posting a 4-5 record with a 2.80 ERA in 86.2 innings pitched over 14 starts. He led the entire BIG EAST in strikeouts, and ranked among the conference leaders in ERA and innings pitched. He currently ranks seventh in the Georgetown record books with 165 career strikeouts. He was named a team captain for his senior year and was a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection. Off the field, Smith stays busy in the classroom, working to complete a double major in operations and information management and finance as well as a minor in economics. He also finds time to serve as the vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and give back to the community. This past fall, Smith and several of his teammates spent a day at the Nats Youth Baseball Academy playing with the Challenger Divisions ââ'¬" a part of Little League designed for special needs youth, especially those with severe intellectual and physical disabilities. He also spent time at the Volunteers of America/Mary Marshall Assisted Living, assisting and hanging out with the elderly, and at Martha's Outfitters, a clothing bank and thrift store that was gearing up for the winter clothing drives.
