The Georgetown University softball team (7-26, 1-7 BIG EAST) suffered a 6-2 setback to BIG EAST foe Creighton (22-12, 6-1 BIG EAST) in the finale of a three-game series held at the CU Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Olivia Russ (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) led the Hoyas with a solo home run in the top of the third for Georgetown's first run of the game. GU's second run was courtesy of a single from freshman Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) and seniors Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) and Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) each added hits for the Hoyas.
Creighton opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single to left field to take an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first.
Georgetown tied the game in the top of the third inning as Russ blasted her first home run of the season over the left center wall. However, the score didn't stay tied for long as the Jays loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead, 3-1, with a sacrifice fly from Mileah McKelvy.
Creighton extended its lead to 6-1 with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth inning and a pair of walks on bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth.
The Hoyas were able to get one run back in the sixth inning on a single by Bennett to score Giovanniello but were not able to maintain the momentum.
Georgetown steps out of conference to host Towson for a single game at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 in Guy Mason Field.
