WASHINGTON -
Despite connecting on 15 hits, the Georgetown University softball team (7-25, 1-6 BIG EAST) dropped both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 5-4 and 15-2 to Creighton in Omaha, Neb. on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas and the Bluejays are set to play the rubber match on Sunday at noon EST.
In the opening game, Creighton's Michelle Trulin got the Bluejays on the board first with a three-run home run to right field in the bottom of the second inning.
An RBI double down the right field line from senior Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) helped the Hoyas cut Creighton's advantage to 3-1 in the top of the third inning. However, the Bluejays answered right back with a home run from Allie Reinhart in the bottom of the frame.
CU added a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout to third off the bat of Kelsey Allender.
Unyielding, the Georgetown defense slowed Creighton's momentum, limiting the Bluejays to only one hit for the remainder of the game.
Offensively, Georgetown looked to chip away at Creighton's 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth as the Hoyas struck twice to halve its deficit to 5-3. GU got on base with consecutive singles from sophomore Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) and freshman Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) before freshman Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) dished a ground ball to center field to plate both teammates.
Staying hot at the plate, Bennett delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh. Overall the Hoyas hammered out five hits in the last three innings but were not able to find the equalizer, dropping the game, 5-4 in seven innings.
Giovanniello took the loss in the circle for the Hoyas, dropping to 6-16 as she allowed five hits and six walks while fanning six.
Georgetown lost its second game against Creighton, 15-2.
Overall, GU was led by Bennett as she collected four RBI on three hits. Kane and Belknap each added two runs and three hits.
The Hoyas will conclude the series against the Bluejays, tomorrow at noon EST. Live stats and streaming are available through www.guhoyas.com.
