ITA Names Hoya Men and Women to All-Academic Squad

July 25, 2016

WASHINGTON - Both the Georgetown University men's and women's tennis teams have been named 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic squads. Additionally, 11 Hoyas received 2016 ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition including seven on the women's side and four on the men's.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is given to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 and spring 2016).

A total of 13 BIG EAST squads, eight women's and five men's, earned All-Academic Team honors.

Individually, the women had seven Scholar-Athlete honorees including Sophia Barnard (Mill Neck, N.Y./Portledge School), Madeline Foley (Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall St. Marks), Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va./Langley High School), Liselot Koenen (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) and Daphne de Chatellus (Tiburon, Calif./Redwood). GU's two BIG EAST All-Conference honorees also made the list in Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and Victoire Sapperstein (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School).

On the men's side Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton), Ryan McElvenny (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School), Jordon Porter (Ellicott, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) received the honor.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letterwinner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year). More than 4,200 scholar-athletes were recognized across all divisions, along with over 700 all-academic teams. Of the eight women's teams honored from the conference, DePaul, Georgetown and St. John's had a league-best seven scholar-athletes. A total of 43 BIG EAST women earned the ITA's academic distinction. On the men's side, twenty eight BIG EAST men were named scholar-athlete by the ITA.
