Aug. 24, 2016 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer team plays the third of a four-game home stand to start the season on Thursday, Aug. 25, hosting the University of Delaware at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
The game will be shown live on the Georgetown Athletics website, www.GUHoyas.com, with Tom Kolker, the radio voice of Major League Soccer's New York City Football Club, calling all of the action.
The Blue & Gray opened the 2016 regular season last weekend, beating Towson, 6-0, on Aug. 19, and falling to No. 5/1 Stanford, 3-0, on Sunday.
The loss to Stanford was only the third loss at home since the 2012 season for the Hoyas at Shaw Field. GU has a 31-3-5 record on campus over the last four-plus seasons. Under Head Coach Dave Nolan, the Blue & Gray carry an 87-23-10 record at home (since 2004).
The Hoyas were led last weekend by junior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry), who was named the BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Corboz scored three goals and finished with seven points in the team's season-opening win over the Tigers. The BIG EAST's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Corboz scored three goals in the first 29 minutes of the game as GU led 4-0 at the half. She assisted on the team's first goal of the second half.
Corboz, who was among 36 players selected to the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List, recognizing the top player in the country, has four multi-goal games in her career now and registered a career high with seven points.
GU also received goals last weekend from senior forward Grace Damaska (Milton, Ga./Blessed Trinity) and from a pair of freshmen, Casey Richards (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highland) and Carson Nizialek (Chantilly, Va./Freedom). Freshman midfielder Paula Germino-Watnick (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) added an assist.
The season opening weekend also marked the debut in goal for sophomore Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day), a transfer from UCLA. After a shutout against Towson, she made five saves in the loss to Stanford. Through two games, she carries a 1.68 goals-against average.
The Hoyas lead the head-to-head series against Delaware, 5-0-0, including a 2-0-0 mark at home. Last year, GU posted a 2-0 win at Delaware, with Corboz scoring a goal in the first half on the way to the win.
Delaware opened its season last weekend with a pair of losses, first at Villanova (3-2) and then at Syracuse (2-0). Freshmen Jillian Vassallo and Dani Kabat each scored goals for the Blue Hens in the Villanova game. Junior Kailyn Rekos started both games in goal and has a 2.50 goals-against average with 14 saves. Delaware was picked to finish in sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll. The Blue Hens return their top eight scorers from a team that went 8-9-2 overall last season.
Georgetown closes its season-opening four-game home stand on Sunday, Aug. 28, hosting Colorado College at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
