Sept. 20, 2016 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore women's soccer player Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) was named the BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday.
Schechtman earned the win after posting back-to-back shutouts last week, first a 1-0 win at George Washington last Thursday, and then a 1-0 double overtime win at then-No. 2/1 West Virginia on Sunday.
The Hoyas, winners of seven-straight games, improved to 8-1-0 overall and are ranked No. 10 in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Schechtman was a key figure on Sunday in the win over the Mountaineers, who were ranked No. 2 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and No. 1 in the country by Soccer America. She made eight saves, helped to defend nine corner kicks and 23 shots by the Mountaineers, who led the nation in shots per game. The sophomore made one save in the win over GW on Thursday.
Overall this season, Schechtman has an 8-1-0 record with an 0.90 goals-against average, 26 saves and four shutouts.
This is the fifth-straight week that Georgetown has had at least one of the weekly major award winners. She follows junior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Book, N.J./Pingry), who was the Offensive Player of the Week last week ââ'¬" and also earned the award on Aug. 22 and Sept. 3, - senior forward Grace Damaska (Milton, Ga./Blessed Trinity), who was named the Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 29, and junior Elizabeth Wenger (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), who was named Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 29. . Georgetown is back in action next Sunday, Sept, 25, hosting Providence at Shaw Field. Kickoff in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both schools is slated for 1 p.m. The game will be shown live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, with Monika Moore calling all of the action.
