Sept. 30, 2016 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's McDonough Arena was host to some of the best athletes in the world on Wednesday, Sept. 28, as more than 500 Olympians and Paralympians came to the Hilltop for the Team USA Awards.
The United States Olympic Committee held its Team USA Awards ceremony to honor the awe-inspiring, outstanding U.S. performances from the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The awards show will air on NBC Sports Network on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 10 p.m.
Fans were able to vote for the Best of the Olympic Games in six different categories: Female Athlete of the Games (Katie Ledecky, swimming), Male Athlete of the Games (Michael Phelps, swimming), Team of the Olympic Games (women's gymnastics), Female Athlete of the Paralympic Games (Tatyana McFadden, track & field), Male Athlete of the Paralympic Games (Brad Snyder, swimming) and Team of the Paralympic Games (sitting women's volleyball).
There was a definite Georgetown feel to the event, as Head Men's Basketball Coach John Thompson III and Hall of Fame Coach Emeritus John Thompson Jr. presented the Coach of the Olympic Games Award to Adam Krikorian, who guided the women's water polo team to its second-straight gold medal.
Three Georgetown Olympians who competed in Rio were also present at the awards ceremony, sailor Charlie Buckingham (C'11), track & field athlete Emily Infeld (MSB'12) and Paralympic swimmer ââ'¬" a two-time gold medalist and world record holder ââ'¬" Michelle Konkoly (C'14), who presented an award as well.
The event started with a two-hour red carpet procession, followed by the hour-long awards show in McDonough Arena and an after party at the Healy Family Student Center. The show was hosted by Akbar Gbajabiamila and Matt Iseman from NBC's "American Ninja Warrior." Award presenters included United States Secretary of State John Kerry and Olympic legend Carl Lewis.
