WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (9-7, 1-5 BIG EAST) fell to the St. John's University (12-5, 4-2 BIG EAST), 71-66, on Friday evening McDonough Arena. The Hoyas will host Seton Hall University on Sunday in a 2 p.m. matchup on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
"This hurts, it should hurt, but we're nowhere near throwing in the towel," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "We just have to tweak some little things and know that we've seen this team play at a high level and we've seen this team be inconsistent. We just need production from certain people to count on them night in and night out, but collectively, it's going to start on the defensive end. We'll tune up the defense tomorrow and get ready for Seton Hall."
Two Hoyas scored in double figures as junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the way with 19 points apiece. Junior center Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) managed 11 rebounds, and classmate Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) had eight caroms to her credit.
Georgetown was outrebounded, 39-36, and shot 39.7 percent (25-of-58) from the field while allowing St. John's 44.3 percent (27-of-61) shooting. GU had 12 turnovers, and forced nine SJU turnovers on four steals.
St. John's opened the game with a layup and built a five-point lead just two minutes in. Adomako cut it to two with a trey, but the Red Storm had an answer. A three-point play from White at 6:07 sparked an 8-2 run as Adomako hit another from long range and junior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) knocked down a pair of free throws.
A layup in the final minute tied the game at 15 at the end of the first quarter.
The lead went back and forth to start the second quarter. A 5-0 GU run midway through put Georgetown ahead, 24-19, thanks to a 3-pointer by Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook/Wake Forest) and a layup from Belk.
St. John's came roaring back to tie the game again with 1:56 to play in the half. The Hoyas had chances down the stretch but trailed, 33-29, at the break.
The Red Storm pushed the lead to eight in the opening minutes of the second half as GU looked to regain its rhythm. Georgetown battled, but couldn't make shots as St. John's made it a 10-point game midway through the quarter.
The Hoyas trailed by as much as 13 in the third quarter, but worked to cut the deficit. In the final minute of the stanza, White hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 50-42. However, last-second heroics made it 54-44 in favor of the Red Storm entering the final quarter.
Burton hit a jumper from the corner on the first possession and the defense came up with a big stop. This was followed by White free throws to make it 54-48 as GU clawed its way back in.
It was an uphill battle for the Hoyas throughout the fourth quarter as the squad repeatedly made it a two-possession game. GU got as close as five points on four occasions, but could never move closer to complete the comeback eventually falling, 71-66.
