Jan. 13, 2017 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team plays its final non-conference contest of the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 14, hosting former conference rival UConn at Verizon Center. Tipoff is slated for noon.
The game will be shown live on FOX, with Gus Johnson calling the play-by-play, Jim Jackson serving as the color analyst and Shannon Spake on the sidelines.
The Hoyas are coming off an 83-55 win over BIG EAST Conference rival St. John's on Monday, the team's first league win of the season. GU enters the weekend with a 9-8 overall record and a 1-4 mark in league play.
In the win over St. John's, junior guard L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) scored 16 points, grabbed four rebounds and had two assists to lead four players in double figures. Freshman guard Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J./St. Anthony) added 13 points and six rebounds, while graduate student guard Rodney Pryor (Evanston, Ill./Notre Dame Prep/Robert Morris) added 13 points and eight rebounds and sophomore forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.] netted 11 points.
Saturday's game with UConn is the 66th meeting all-time between the schools. Georgetown leads the head-to-head series, 35-30. The Blue & Gray is 21-8 at home all-time against UConn and the Hoyas have a 4-1 record at home under Head Coach John Thompson III. Georgetown has won six of the last nine games played in the series. The teams renewed their rivalry last year, with the Huskies prevailing, 68-62, in a game played in Hartford, Conn. This is the first game at Georgetown since 2012, a 58-44 Hoya win.
Pryor leads the team, and is fourth in the BIG EAST, with 18.2 points per game. Pryor is third on the team with 5.1 rebounds and has hit a team-best 46 3-point field goals.
Peak is second on the team in scoring (15.9 ppg), fourth in rebounding (4.2 rpg) and leads the team in assists (3.1 apg). Peak ranks among the BIG EAST leaders in scoring (11th), assists (T11th), free throw percentage (11th), assist/turnover ratio (13th), and minutes played (3rd, 33.2 mpg).
Derrickson, who missed four games earlier in the season, is third on the team with 9.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. The sophomore has played well since returning 11 games ago, averaging 10.7 points and 5.0 rebounds. He has scored in double figures in six-straight games, notching 14.8 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 60.0 percent from the floor and 53.3 percent from 3-point land.
Sophomore center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.3 points and second with 5.2 rebounds, while senior center Bradley Hayes (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood), who has scored in double figures three times this year, is fifth on the team with 5.4 points and leads the team with 5.4 rebounds per game.
Mosely, a starter in all 17 games this season, has scored in double figures in each of the last two games, including a career-high 20 points in an overtime loss to then-No. 18 Butler. He is averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in the last two games. Overall this season, he is scoring 5.3 points per game and is second on the team with 2.6 assists.
UConn enters today's game with a 7-9 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the American Athletic Conference following a 73-59 win over Temple on Wednesday night. The Huskies have won two-straight games (Temple, UCF), but have lost four of their last six games and are 1-3 away from home this year. Sophomore guard Jalen Adams is one of four players scoring in double figures for the Huskies, leading the team with 15.2 points per game, while leading the team with 5.8 assists. Sophomore forward Terry Larrier is second on the team with 13.5 points, senior guard Rodney Purvis is scoring 12.8 points and has hit a team-best 33 3-point field goals and freshman guard Alterique Gilbert adds 10.3 points. Senior forward Kenan Facey is averaging 7.5 points and leads the team with 7.1 rebounds. UConn is averaging 65.6 points per game, while yielding 65.3 points and shooting 42.7 percent from the floor.
