Men's Golf to Host 33rd Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate

Oct. 15, 2017

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's men's golf team returns to the links this week as they host the 33rd Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate on October 16-17. The 54-hole event will feature 10 teams playing the par-71, 7,035-yard course at the Members Club at Four Streams Club in Beallsville, Md.

Two Georgetown squads will compete in this year's field, along with teams from Florida Atlantic, Navy, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Saint Joseph's, Stetson, Temple and William & Mary. Monday's 36 holes will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. with the Hoya Blue squad teeing off from holes 1-4 and the Hoya Gray squad teeing off from holes 14-18.

The 10-team field played its practice round on Sunday, joined by special guests from the Veterans Golf Association (VGA). Members of VGA ate lunch and played during the practice round with the teams competing in the tournament, allowing the student-athletes to spend the day with the military heroes.

The relationship between the VGA and Georgetown University men's golf is one fostered by Georgetown Men's Golf Coach Tommy Hunter. The VGA aims to introduce golf to men and women of the United States Armed Forces, helping them heal, restore and recover from combat-related exposure, a mission Hunter felt could be helped by the Georgetown Intercollegiate field of student-athletes.

"This is the second year I've had the opportunity to play the practice round with veterans from the VGA," said Georgetown co-captain Sam Madsen (Madison, Wis./Edgewood/Cardinal Gibbons [Fla.]) "It really puts things into perspective to be able to talk about their experiences and put yourself in their shoes. Being able to help their process with dealing with PTSD is a nice opportunity to help other people and gain perspective."

"It's also important that we represent a university in the Nation's Capital that can honor our armed forces and that they have a role with our team on a year-to-year basis," added fellow co-captain Cole Berman (Philadelphia, Pa./The Haverford School).

Georgetown is coming off a ninth-place showing at the Fighting Irish Classic in South Bend, Ind., last the weekend. Jack Musgrave (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) carded a 68 in the final round, the best 18 holes of the season so far for the Blue & Gray, to finish tied for 22nd. Madsen (was hot on his trails, posting a 73 on Monday to tie for 25th overall.

Following the Georgetown Intercollegiate, the Hoyas wrap up their fall schedule at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, hosted by Old Dominion at the Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powells Point, N.C., from Oct. 22-24.
