WASHINGTON - The No. 12 Georgetown women's soccer team tied the Creighton University Bluejays (2-9-2, 0-3-1 BIG EAST), 1-1, in overtime on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the draw, the Hoyas move to 9-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play.
"The result is the most important thing, it was disappointing that we didn't get the three points that we wanted," said Georgetown Head Coach Dave Nolan. "At home you always want to take care of home field advantage, and to be fair, we did enough to win two games. But at the end of the day, you've got to give all the credit in the world to Creighton."
The Hoyas controlled almost all of the possession throughout the first half. The squad had shots at the goal and also saw the ball roll through the box on multiple occasions. Despite the chances, including a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks, no one could find the back of the net.
As it looked as though the teams would go into the break in a scoreless tie, the Blue & Gray was whistled for a foul at the top of the box. The Bluejays' Hannah Miller stepped in front of the wall and bent the ball into the top corner of the net to give Creighton the 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.
That score would stand at the break as GU trailed by a goal despite an 8-1 advantage in shots.
The second half began much like the first as Georgetown had shot after shot go just high of the crossbar or balls in the box sent out by the Bluejay defense.
As time wore on, the Hoyas sent countless searching balls into the box, but the Bluejay defense stood strong thwarting every attempt.
The equalizer came in the 81st minute as sophomore midfielder Paula Germino-Watnick (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took the ball off of a defender's foot and dribbled down the far side of the field. She pulled up just outside the top of the box and let one go sending it just under the crossbar to tie the game at one.
That wasn't enough for the Hoyas as the GU offense continued to send in balls, dominating possession and keeping the Creighton defense on its heels. The efforts would not be enough, however, as the teams ended regulation in a 1-1 tie.
Georgetown served in searching balls throughout the first overtime with the Bluejays not registering a shot. The CU defense stopped every attempt, and even a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks, would not give Georgetown the game winner forcing another 10 minutes of play.
The story was the same for the final 10 minutes as the Hoyas controlled the game, but couldn't get the game winner resulting in the 1-1 tie.
Georgetown outshot Creighton, 36-2, and took 16 corner kicks while the Bluejays were awarded none. McKenzie Meola tallied nine saves for CU, while GU's Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) did not make a save facing only one shot on goal.
The Hoyas will head out on the road for a matchup with the Villanova Wildcats on Sunday in Pennsylvania. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and a link to a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
